Birder. Leftist. I was @EdwardGaillard on Twitter, I am on Mastodon as @edg@mastodon.social The duty of the Opposition is to oppose. - Benjamin Disraeli 🇺🇦
I fully support the Republicans making their affordability message "cry me a river."
this stuff is real and tangible in material ways we don’t have the expanded child tax credit today because joe manchin was personally opposed to it and couldn’t be talked out of his opposition he was also vote 50 of 50, if susan collins had lost in 2020 he’d have been vote 51 and we’d have it
some specific democrats suck and they suck in ways that are detrimental to issues that you personally care about you know how you solve that once we are past the primaries? you elect even more democrats so that their votes are less important joe manchin couldn’t have done as much damage as vote 52
🧵 Are you following what could be this year's most consequential East Coast ocean story? Odyssey Marine Exploration is asking the Dept. of the Interior for a lease to mine ~2,500 sq. miles of seafloor off Virginia's coast. Here is why this raises major red flags: 1/7
Actually enforcing existing laws (Mamdani) vs. reactionary lawmaking that would make many things worse (Menin). bsky.app/profile/c-so...
Mayor Zohran Mamdani announces that New York City is issuing cease and desist letters to more than 40 retailers selling illegal e-bikes (generally, vehicles that can go faster than local speed limits allow). The targeted retailers include Amazon and Best Buy.
Due to massive Bluesky outage, very late with the #BirdOfTheDay theme, #RedOrDead, any bird with red in the capture but not on the bird or a winter bird on dead branches. From the archives comes a Humm Attack. #rubythroatedhummingbird #birdsofrhodeisland #birdphotography
"please listen to our voice menu as some of the options have changed." @dukehealth.bsky.social I'm begging you here. just go back to "somebody picks up the phone." it's better. for the patients it's better.
I have no desire to hold public office & am entirely unelectable besides. my recreational habits in 1986 alone disqualify me. but I'm running for president anyway & my entire platform is "when you need your health care provider, you get a live operator every time." I will win in a landslide
Happy International Owl Awareness Day! To celebrate, here's an owl fact from The Wilson Journal of Ornithology.
gives me a headache just thinking about it

"A.i." is bullshit. "A.i." detection tools are bullshit. "A.i." in education is bullshit. "A.i." in the arts is bullshit. "A.i." in business and government is bullshit.
I get very caught up in tiny optimistic stories, which this year's @amornith.bsky.social meeting centers This morning's plenary by Massachusetts Audubon's Lyra Brennan included a story of a volunteer who found a Piping Plover nest buried by a dune, dug out the female and eggs, and they *all lived*!
one of the things with dem focus on electability is it turns so much of the populace into pundits. "well this candidate appeals to middle income suburban moms, and thats what we need to win." its left over from clinton era poll obsession. we need to go back to basics: support who you like.

Today's Prospect Patriot is Frances Perkins. She saw the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory go ablaze in 1911 and her life changed. "The New Deal was born that day," she said. 22 years later she'd be America's first female cabinet member. prospect.org/2026/08/04/a...
Frances Perkins: The Architect of Social Security - The American Prospect
In her words, Frances Perkins, the first woman cabinet secretary, ‘came to Washington to work for God, FDR, and the millions of forgotten, plain, common workingmen.’

That's easy: they'll whine about the left.
New in PN: Moderate Democrats have a choice to make "They can spend the next three months reinforcing Republican messaging about their party & making it less likely Dems take power. Or they can put the 'battle for the soul of the party' off for a while and do what they can to help their party win."
6. Worst splinter you've ever had. Plutonium work has many hazards, but only a few are both genuinely scary and somewhat likely. Glove sticks involving the temporary or - far worse - permanent entrapment of nuclear material into your hand can quickly give you your lifetime allowable exposure.
The bad-faith AI-booster argument about artists being “gatekeepers” is so facile that it really doesn’t deserve any air. Those are not serious people, and your time and energy for yourself are too valuable to expend on them!
If you’ve got land that could be Loggerhead Shrike habitat, please consider planting/saving shrubs for shrikes. If you'd like to support habitat preservation, consider supporting Nature Saskatchewan, Birds Canada, or other organizations working toward preservation of grasslands biodiversity #birds

Islands of habitat also exist in more urban areas. In the past two years I’ve been lucky to see successful Loggerhead Shrike nests in Saskatoon's “naturalized” parks where biodiversity and habitat preservation are a priority. Just look at these Juniors 😍 #birds
They breed in the shrubby grasslands in southern Canada and with loss of native grassland they’ve adapted to using shelterbelts (shrubs planted around the perimeter of crop fields). As farm equipment got bigger, shelterbelts started disappearing #birds
