Protection orders kind of bump up against the fact that they're punitive, and that their subjects have already shown a willingness to heavily transgress social values and in many cases break the law outright. So there's not a lot of preventative value in the moment - you have to rely on deterrence.

Based on surveys with survivors AND professionals, they found: The vast majority of participants agreed that protection orders matter. Yet only a small minority said that protection orders are working well.
Even trying to *get* a protection order put my life at risk. The most recent femicides here in Ontario involved women being killed by men they had protection orders against. The system needs to change.
