my main memory of 9/11 is writing an essay that basically went "this is clearly the result of our past meddling in international affairs, so we should learn from the experience to do less of that", getting chosen to read it in front of the whole school, and then watching us not do that for 25 years

Even when I wrote something that (to me) was pretty straightforward, readers were saying that they weren’t able to follow the plot. The lesson here is to be vague and odd and obscure as you want because even when you think you’ve made things clear, it won’t be.

It’s about time we had a reckoning with the need so many writers feel to over-explain everything aspect of their stories, even in non Weird genres. Readers don’t need to be babied. Let us figure things out. Leave room for interpretation. Over-explanation makes writing worse.
