Hi Everyone! I will be broadcasting live from the Social Lives of Viruses 2026 conference @zoology.ubc.ca @ubcbiodiversity.bsky.social in beautiful Vancouver BC, organized by @asherleeks.bsky.social and myself with the support of Canadian Institutes of Health Research and @moorefound.bsky.social.

Evolutionary genetics and cell biology. And co-host of This Week in Evolution: www.microbe.tv/twievo/ Elde lab: cellvolution.org Opinions: my own, not employers
Officially recruiting postdocs at GW. If you are interested in genetic novelty, structural variation, or evo genetics please get in touch! We have data sets on mulitple organisms with large population sizes (Drosophila, Megalonaias nervosa) and species in decline (fireflies, mussels, elephants).
We have great newts to share! Twenty tiny Mazama newts have hatched in our lab — the very first babies of their kind ever in human care.
The Fauci hearing was a disgrace. Here are some reminders of how it really went down in 2020. Never forget.
From the abstract: “promoting a woman to Associate Professor increases female faculty by 1.5 members after 15 years, leads to six additional female PhD graduates over the following decade, and raises the number who subsequently remain in academia and reach tenured positions”
Fascinating paper on the progression of women in academia. 👩🏻🔬 ⚛️ 🧪 #AcademicSky docs.iza.org/dp18477.pdf?... Here's an excerpt from the conclusion:
It was, in accelerated fashion, a parallel to how living through climate change is making Republicans far worse on emissions & pollution.
The Fauci hearing perfectly illustrated how living through a once in a century pandemic somehow made Republicans far worse on public health. God forbid we face anything like covid again during Trump 2.0. There will be no Dr Fauci around to try to talk sense to Trump.
The point of creating such weak cases isn’t to win. It’s to scare people into not protesting. It’s to scare us into silence.
"Davis, the government says, has attended and facilitated meetings about protests and discussed his anti-authoritarian ideology with other activists. He is not accused of violent acts, taking any specific actions at protests nor having any encounters with ICE agents. He is facing 6 years in prison."
My quote of the day Until this moment, Senator, I think I never really gauged your cruelty or your recklessness… Let us not assassinate this lad further, Senator. You’ve done enough. Have you no sense of decency, sir, at long last? Have you left no sense of decency? Joseph Welch
1. The new Trump / Kratsios plan for US science appears explicitly designed to destroy US universities. Diverting money to tech donors is probably just a bonus. Gift link.
Trump’s Plan for Science: More Money for A.I., Less for Universities (Gift Article)
Michael Kratsios, President Trump’s science adviser, proposed overhauling how the government funds research. Democrats said Mr. Trump’s actions had weakened science.

There are a lot of concerns about the way we're going, but this is a really fundamental piece. Universities like mine do a lot of heavy lifting when it comes to higher ed in the US. Our entire infrastructure is, in many ways, built on the reliability of Federal funding.
America's R1 universities educate ~8–9 million students (undergraduate + graduate) -> more than 1/3 of U.S. college students (vs. the ~0.6% of Ivies). Undermining this system threatens the institutions that train our workforce and drive scientific innovation. www.science.org/doi/10.1126/...
Remember when NIH Director Jay Bhattacharya said there were no banned words and NIH Program Officers were making them up? Here’s the proof he lied: apnews.com/article/cali... I know, Jay Bhattacharya lying is not news. But it’s still really validating to have the admission.

Rep. Aisha Gomez: “To look at people standing up against ICE and see ‘paid protesters’ says nothing about us and everything about you.” “That you cannot conceive of us loving our neighbors so much that we would actually do something for them.”

This morning in Biddeford, Maine, a 26-year-old man said goodbye to his wife and daughter and left for work. Moments later he was dead, shot in the head by ICE agents, the second man ICE has killed in six days. ICE is killing our neighbors. ICE cannot be reformed. Abolish ICE.
Lorenzo Salgado Araujo was a father of three who built houses in Houston, started his own business, and raised his family here for 35 years. His son became a teacher. ICE agents killed him in cold blood. 🧵
Hi. We're in the Age of Diarrhea. I'm a global health expert on helping children survive diarrhea. Here's what to do if you might have picked up cyclospora. 🧵 1. Call your primary care if possible. 2. Take oral rehydration therapy, which isn't just drinking fluids. 1/
welcome to the Age of Diarrhea
Of the many acts of destruction that RFK Jr unleashed upon US & global health, IMHO freezing US funding to Gavi (which will cause an estimated 600,000 child deaths), the dismantling of CDC & of the federal vaccine apparatus, & ending federal funding for mRNA vaccine R&D will end up as the deadliest

“This is textbook public-goods economics: workforce training with enormous social returns and diffuse benefits that no single private company can capture, so no single private company will pay for it.” Spot on! You can’t just shrug when people ask about who will do the science in the future!
Excellent response from Dr. Bertagnolli to the article from Scott Atlas www.linkedin.com/pulse/dont-a...
“There's a piece of NIH's mission Atlas never mentions, because it doesn't fit his story: NIH doesn't just fund experiments, it funds people. Training grants, fellowships, career development programs, and research project grants that carry graduate students and postdocs through their formative yrs”

Quick 🧪 and law note. The SCOTUS decision in Slaughter today has *profound* implications for US science, cancer cures and the economy. Sotomayor dissent: “Put simply, today the majority reshapes our Government… shifting tremendous power over broad swaths of American life into the President’s hands”
BREAKING: The Supreme Court, 6-3, overrules Humphrey's Executor, giving the president broad firing powers over the leadership of federal agencies and limiting Congress's power to limit presidential firings. In a 5-4 decision, however, the court said the Federal Reserve is likely different.
NIH grants have been under political scrutiny since early 2025. But what does the screening process actually look like? What is being flagged? I spent a month digging into leaked docs and emails. We've published the 235-word list that are being flagged by an internal AI tool. And so much more. 🧵
Inside the new political screening that’s stalling NIH grants
Mandatory reviews by top health officials and checks for 235 disfavoured terms have left hundreds of vetted grant applications in administrative limbo.

Russell Vought is an evil man. This plan is nothing short of a personal take-over of federal grant making. It will affect ALL of us.
