there is no such thing as "age verification." All "age verification" is actually "identity verification." You can coat it in glitter and "privacy-preserving" wrapping paper. But in the end, mandating age verification means mandating surveillance be built into software and hardware. Period.

It's something I've definitely complained about before. Why aren't we getting Star Trek stories pertinent to climate change, immigration, biodiversity, vaccinations, authoritarianism, AI, personal data privacy, misinformation, hate speech, shootings, corruption, wealth inequality, extinctions…

The inability to distinguish between what random people WITH NO INSTITUTIONAL AUTHORITY OVER OTHERS post on social media or put on a sign and what the ruling party does on the daily to millions is what helps allow the latter to keep getting away with literal murder.

if you are any kind of creative or artist or writer you *have* to understand sex workers and porn/erotica artists/authors as being members of the same class as us. to the extent society recognizes a difference between "legitimate" art and porn, it's only as a tenuous, convenient, temporary fiction.

To me, the foundational tension of modern AI is this: If the stated goal is to create a human-level intelligence that can replace human workers but lacks human rights, then the real aspiration is slavery; but if human-level intelligence is impossible, then the industry's stated goal is a lie.

What happens if a creator streams your game and is opted in? Does Twitch think it has the right to feed a developer's game into its AI slop factory? This has deeper ramifications than it seems on the surface.

There was genuinely no way for us to know! It was even published in the NYTimes! It would have taken a ton of digging and original reporting for us to have individually fact checked it. So in this case I’d say it wasn’t one of those situations where we ran with something we shouldn’t have.
