I really liked Jeff's thread, but as one of the early originators of the carbon footprint concept, I want to address this misconception because I've heard it often.

Something like that's happening in higher ed with AI. Institutions capitulate or dodge; students are submitting; & they believe it's their individual failing. 7/

I get a kick out of the idea that "taco bell scientists" discovered the source of the outbreak and cut off the supply for their own restaurants prior to the CDC or FDA doing anything at all.

A quick word on Taco Bell: That's where we found the suspected lettuce, and it's not bc Taco Bell is gross. It's bc Taco Bell is REALLY GOOD at tracing product! Keeping track of exactly where they got their ingredients, & exactly what restaurants each shipment of ingredients went to!

Can confirm that if you bring up AC adoption to French people, they will give 100 reasons why not to (even at these temperatures!): homes were not made for it, green spaces would do the same thing, heat pumps not so reliable, all you need is good ventilation, not enough electricity, etc etc
It is a million degrees F in this French university building, no AC to be seen. I lost my professor jacket at the start of the week, and my button-down shirt yesterday. I'm here in a sweat-soaked white t-shirt, trying to work, stinking up my office. Does this count towards French citizenship?
