Said this before, and will keep saying it: Prior to vaccine availability in the US, almost 1 in 5 people hospitalized during the pandemic DIED. For those admitted to an ICU it was more like 40-50%. The vaccines, and then the combination of vaccines and less lethal variants, changed everything.

My wonderful physician was demoralized by the wildfire smoke. I cheered her up a little with the info that scientists had figured out in the 1980s that if we kept burning fossil fuels, the world's forests would start dying. Scientifically speaking, this was a solved problem 40 years ago.

The amount of low-hanging fruit in the energy transition is just absurd.
I remember attending a conference in ~2004 discussing the models that predicted this outcome, and the societal and scientific implications. It was hard to wrap my head around then that this was the trajectory we were on.

That is literally the only safety rule that is abided by 100% of the time working on aircraft. It could be 115° outside and we would still work as hard as we could, but the second we heard lightning within 5 everyone drops what their doing and walks in.

When I look at heatwave forecasts, I focus on that overnight low, like the shocking 27 C for NYC. "Tropical nights", when temps stayed above 20 C / 68 F, drove much of the mortality during past European heatwaves, and 2021 Pacific NW heat dome. Inability to cool off overnight is the silent killer.
