Author & woman around town. Married to Delia Sherman. Wrote Swordspoint. Host/writer of public radio’s Sound & Spirit. A new gig every 17 years. Back to writing novels. Seeking for further amusement. I would probably like you.

In 1986, contracting HIV meant you were going to die, usually slowly, painfully, and alone. Now it's a chronic illness like hypertension. In 1986, gay and lesbian couples couldn't have their relationships legally recognized and had to adopt elaborate legal workarounds.

Food, man. Food is so much better than it was in 1986. All of it. Poor-people food, restaurant food, fresh food, frozen food. Food is just a hell of a lot better.

air travel is one of those experiences that has gotten monotonically worse over my entire lifetime

question though: has *anything* in the last 40+ years genuinely gotten *better*?

like, there's *more* stuff, sure, but is any of it *better*?

BY THE WAY I never said nor intended to say that one must be able to speak rationally about the choices you made. "Look, exploding potatoes are just COOL ok?" is A)not rational and B) a thing that a writer is very likely to say about their work. You don't need a powerpoint presentation of themes.

For writers worried that they won't be able to "prove" their work isn't Spicy Autocomplete--worry not. You thought about every choice and will be able to talk about those choices easily and clearly. Folks who used the slop machine didn't make choices and won't have anything to say about why

Just watched Ep1S1 of DEADLOCH. I cannot stop laughing. 1) Kevin the Murder Seal 2) If ever you find me in the grip of severe depression, just play me the Deadloch Women's Choir singing "I Touch Myself" My only problem is that now Delia wants to go to Tasmania worse than ever.

I enjoyed getting to step in at the last minute to fill in for Reader #4, who had to cancel at the last minute! Already there to hear these fabulous women read. The evening began as always with an early dinner in Japan Village. I <3 Industry City!

But having been trained in it, its SO OBVIOUS when older politicians are doing a Form Platitude. Hear me out. The thing to understand is, it’s the equivalent of “I’m fine, and how are you” in a conversational opening salvo. It just serves to signal “I know this dance, I wasn’t raised in a barn”.

Younger folks, take note: your parents grew up in a world where to answer anything substantively different from “I’m fine, and how are you” was considered actively rude. And everyone old enough to be President today remembers at least the dying gasps of that world. Many set their habits in it.
