Naturalistic everyday experiences are a blind spot in developmental psychology. Our theories assume they matter - but we know very little about them. Nele's paper is a super important contribution to overcoming this paradox - she developed an automated pipeline to classify social experiences.

Happy to share our new preprint exploring the everyday social ecology of preschoolers! We applied an automated multimodal pipeline to 267 hours of naturalistic egocentric video from 107 children (ages 3–5) to capture the changing natural statistics of everyday interactions: doi.org/10.31234/osf...

1st published paper alert ⚠️ in which @mcxfrank.bsky.social and I ask: How robust is the “shape bias”? a phenomenon that has been central to theories of early word learning: If a child hears a new word for an object, they often extend it to other objects with the same shape. tinyurl.com/JCL-shapebias

The more often you hear something, the more likely you are to believe that it is true. But please, don't believe everything you hear about teens today. Science and how well they are doing, despite the suffering of adults around them, tells a different story.

Like Humans, Great Apes Think Differently From Each Other

A new study assesses how cognitive skills of great apes vary between individuals.

New 🦍 💭 paper in @psychscience.bsky.social We continue to ask simple questions that are hard to answer "Individual Differences in Great Ape Cognition Across Time and Domains: Stability, Structure, and Predictability" Bonus: Rasch models in the supplement 🤓 journals.sagepub.com/doi/10.1177/...

Can language models use subtext in their communication? Can they use common ground to incorporate subtext more effectively? In our new preprint, we study these questions across various domains — from visual communication to story writing games.

I've made an R package for Bayesian Rasch #psychometrics with brms models, easyRaschBayes (on CRAN), implementing simple functions to create figures and tables with model fit metrics, etc. Attaching figures from conditional item infit, item-restscore with GK gamma, and the log-likelihood criterion.

Not a secret anymore! I am extremely proud and happy to present you the EVApeCognition Dataset, out now in Scientific Data. Over the last 5 years we have assembled and standardized data from 150 studies on great ape cognition from the WKPRC in the Leipzig Zoo! www.nature.com/articles/s41...

“we found substantial positive correlations between nonsocial tasks. In contrast, tasks measuring social cognition were not correlated either with each other or with nonsocial measures”

What are children's *naturalistic* everyday experiences like? Nele's paper presents a crucial resource (100+h of 🎥 w/ annotations) that will help us to build the tools we need to study what it's like to be a child in the wild. 🙏to @jacobsfoundation.bsky.social @maxplanck.de @dfg.de for funding!

I am excited to share my first publication in Behavior Research Methods! 🚀 We’ve released ChildLens: 109 hours of open-access, annotated egocentric video/audio from children (ages 3–5). Paper: rdcu.be/fdfAI
