“America is an incredibly rich country with an enormous and growing pool of wealth spread across a huge middle and upper class” really shouldn’t be a controversial viewpoint. It’s very hard to talk sensibly about policy problems and solutions if we can’t acknowledge this base-level fact.

driving is a clear example of social construction of crime, ~cops and media ignoring the rich hurting the poor most online US leftists, especially credentialed ones, identify as drivers. They frame cops as opponents, instead of their allies in maintaining car dominance over lower status non-drivers

This (from Tom Wood) suggests more than just the typical thermostatic backlash is happening right now. In sixteen months, Trump and Republicans have turned the GOP’s largest party ID advantage this century into a tie for its biggest deficit

These people's first priority is causing damage to the USA. Damaging allies is an afterthought. They prioritize treachery above avoiding accountability. Much of what they do is illegal, more of it will be made illegal soon. They are not sneaky enough and leave paper trails everywhere.

One little piece of hope that I’m holding onto as I watch an inconceivably thorough embarrassment of American power in the Persian Gulf is that the people in the military aren’t stupid and know who put them in this mess, and they’re going to remember these freaks as the enemy domestically

Trump, empowered by SCOTUS, entered office convinced he could do insider trading, sell pardons and favors, take bribes, steal and openly flout the law. Now, with the prospect of investigations looming, he is growing ever more fearful that he miscalculated.

Standing up for the smallest of minorities is important because when you accept the premise that one group are expendable because small or ‘insignificant’, you have accepted the idea of the expendability of human life in general, and the enemy will use your acquiescence to pick off yet more.

how is a cooling failure in one datacenter causing a global outage of all Proton services? (actual question)

Screenshot of the Proton status page that states :
Global Outage
Identified - We have identified a critical cooling failure in our Frankfurt datacenter. We are currently in the process of shifting traffic to our backups sites.

Update - It appears that Proton VPN works for some, so it has been changed to "Partial Outage" rather than "Major Outage"

I wear a helmet 99% of the time. They can reduce the odds of concussions and certain injuries and will deter people from blaming me if I get hit. I think it's smart to wear one. But countries with low helmet use have a lower rate of death— because 15 other things are more effective safety measures.

and i think it's worth interrogating why the thing that would increase safety while putting a significant burden on cyclists is considered common-sense while the thing that would do the same for drivers is considered an absurd non-starter. way more motorists die every year than cyclists!

Trump is not just the worst president, but the worst US citizen of my entire lifetime. A world historical failure of humanity and morality. He and his wicked entourage have burdened us with the task of repairing his damage and eradicating his evil legacy for the rest of our lives.
