Classicist, writer, that sort of stuff. Currently teaching Latin to the youth. Yes, my dog's name is Adverb.

A family member was working at AVID back in the day, doing well. At a big company-wide meeting the execs announced “95% of television & movies are edited on Avid!” and during the cheers, their boss quietly said “that means one good competitor cuts our sales in half.” They left the next week.

I always feel crazy pointing this out, but it's such an important point: having 85% market share isn't actually a good thing, especially when you're buying more of your own product than that 85% of the market is

I'm trying to get some writing done in a nice little pod that the apartment building offers. But out of the corner of my eye I can see someone working on a business presentation set of slides in a /different/ pod, and I keep wanting to critique their capitalization choices.

One of the great joys of my adult life has been realizing that I can just pick up a new skill every so often, take a fun little class in it weekly for a year or two, and simply enjoy meeting people and getting medium proficient and not attempting to become professional in it at all!

Got very targeted spam suggesting I buy some software that lets my Latin students properly record their graded declamations to show to their parents, and... I don't... have my students do declamations? Like, read aloud in Latin, yes, but I don't grade them on that much Latin speech! Huh.

sorry folks but one of the many awful, terrible things about politics is that you do sometimes have to reward politicians, even those you don’t like much, with high-value liver treats for actually doing what you want them to do

Triton: Yeah, I can't tell you how often I'm just like, should have just kept travelling, why did I let myself get captured by this Neptune dude, I could have been in a less angsty solar system by now....but no, I'm here, only able to rebel by going in the wrong direction....

Had a sudden burst of nostalgia over the memory of the summer where I was at a weird little retreat with my family for group therapy near Fresno, found out by hunting through a phone book where a store was that had a copy of Nobilis, and got my mom to drive me an hour each way so I could buy it.

Another version of this: My Special Interest is historical sewer systems, and during the most explosive scene in Guillermo Del Toro's new Frankenstein, when everything's blowing up, James hears me go, "is that a 45-degree sluice with a basket-handle profile??? Give me a BREAK"

if you ever want to see something really really funny, watch any hacking scene in a Hollywood movie while sitting next to an IT security person

If you read fiction and you don't like AI you're a hypocrite. If you eat monster munch and don't like asbestos you're a blacksmith. If you play videogames and don't like stubbing your toe you're a submarine captain. We can all just SAY things. It's not hard.

ok this sucks but it is kind of interesting how people use "medieval" when they actually mean 19th century the actual structures of university life - the things faculty, for example, actually DO - would not, in fact, be recognizable to William of Ockham

This Clay Shirky essay about AI in HE uses the word medieval, so we are all obligated to ping @lollardfish.bsky.social and @profgabriele.com . It's just the rules.

" a full verbal recitation of the Odyssey would take somewhere between sixteen and eighteen hours (depending how fast one recites). " Ok HBO, it's time for a seven season unabridged staging of the Odyssey.

I know it’s so pedantic, but I hate it when people throw toga parties and then wear a Greek chiton off Amazon with, like, a gold meander pattern. That’s why I always teach my students how to tie a proper bedsheet toga—because Rome.
