There was no mention of settlement or citizenship reform in the 2024 General Election manifesto. The Spring 2025 white paper (Starmer & Cooper) introduces 5-10 year idea. The compromise sounds more like that than very complex 8+ tier ( 3-5-10-15-20-50 year routes) plan proposed Nov 2025 by Mahmood

The party did not mention citizenship or settlement in its 2024 manifesto but has embarked on an enormously complex and controversial overhaul of indefinite leave to remain. Ethics aside, the government has underestimated the electoral risks of these proposals. While settlement is a complex, technical issue for most people, it is massively salient to the one million directly affected – mostly Commonwealth nationals with voting rights. That is why the reforms prompted the second largest consultation response ever, surpassed only by equal marriage.

New leadership will need to rebalance both rhetoric and policy to ensure clear rules without sacrificing fairness for care workers and others who have come to Britain. Most Labour supporters want to see a ten-year ceiling on settlement routes at most, not a 15 or 20-year wait. The unintended consequences of these rushed and flawed reforms will be a large spike in the undocumented

Famitsu: I'm sure your fans would like to hear at least a little bit about why your game was cancelled. How much are you able to share on that end?

Uchikoshi: I can't go into much detail, but I think it's safe to conclude that it came down to a change in direction on the publisher side. How much a game of this scope would sell, how much profit they could expect to make, those sorts of things. The difficult landscape of the game industry in recent times may have led them to reconsider backing our game.

I mentioned this before in somewhat of a roundabout way on X, but from where I sit, it's clear that AI is becoming deeply intertwined with the overall environment of the video game business as a whole. For a mid-size developer like us, especially one making adventure games, we're at a point where indie games made by individuals are within the same competitive sphere as us. Among these individual creators, you have very small groups of people who are utilizing AI and putting out these games that are made on short timetables and cheaply priced, while nevertheless rich in substance. Those sort of development budgets and schedules don't exactly paint teams like ours in a flattering light. It makes it incredibly difficult for us to put up a fight.

So, how do we respond to something like that? Well, I feel that we have no choice but to use AI on our side, as well. To be certain, I understand that there's resistance out there to game development conducted with AI. I, myself, however, am an AI proponent, I supose you could say. I'm of the mind that we're better off taking charge and making use of it moving forward. That's where I stand.

Even so, I don't think human creativity will fall completely by the wayside just because we choose to employ AI. When it comes to 2D and 3D art, as well as game design and, of course, the story, those sorts of things have to first be thought up by human minds. But after that, in terms of taking that foundation and polishing it up, I think that, to a degree, AI can be entrusted to handle that work. If anything, I feel like using AI in this manner will allow creators to get closer to realizing the things that they actually want to create.

Say that I need a staff member to adjust some part of the graphics in a game. I might order them to shift a portion by X amount of pixels. At first, I tell them to move it by ten pixels, but then once I see the updated version, something still feels off. So then I say it still feels slightly wrong and ask them to move it five pixels to the right this time. And then right after they finish doing so, then I change my mind and tell them that actually, maybe three pixels would work better. You do this back and forth several times, the other person is understandably going to get ticked at you and by the end, their motivation has gone down.

You can hardly blame anyone for reacting like that. Game development takes teamwork, which means you have to be mindful of those interpersonal relations among the rest of the team. As a result, sometimes when something in a game reaches around 70 to 80 percent of my ideal vision, I'll just decide that it works well enough and move on. It's not so much about compromising in that instance as it is the reality of how much time and manpower you have to make a game, as well as the team's morale. You strike that balance because it's the most optimal path forward.

But AI, on the other hand, can handle as many requests as I throw at it and it won't ever complain. Not just when it comes to positioning things, either, but also color tweaks, too. Whereas before a finished product may have reached that 70 to 80 percent of a creator's original vision, now AI can take us infinitely close to that 100 percent they had in mind in the first place. That allows players to experience what creators were really trying to pursue while simultaneously enabling shorter development cycles, to boot. Until now, if you had a creator that took five years to put out their latest game, then fans would have to wait another five years for their next game. Really, these days, a five-year turnaround is more on the short side. But once AI is brought into the mix, that creator might then be able to release their next game in 2.5 years. I reckon any fan would be absolutely thrilled by that.

What that means is that we don't have reduce headcounts. If a game that used to take five years can now be made in half the time, the remaining time can be spent creating something else altogether. That means players are happy and creators are happy, all without any layoffs or firings. I guess maybe that's why I don't really have a pessimistic outlook on AI.
