Flu vaccine booked for Saturday, COVID for mid November. Due to (fortunately?) not being in the categories of people who can have the vaccines provided by the NHS, I pay to get them done privately (about £110 all in). Which is a privilege. It shouldn't be. We should all just have them.

Had COVID-19 and flu shots this afternoon, both in my right arm. Feel a little blah but nothing too bad. Glad I got ‘em. Hope you get yours!

1) An emergency brake on rents - rising by the LOWEST of CPI inflation, wage growth, or 2%. 2) A commitment to protecting social security - not pitting people on benefits against spending on weapons. 3) Energy in public hands and a energy revolution now - cutting bills for everyone, forever.

This article offers half a dozen reasons why people have stopped having friends and family over, but it ignores the fact that the women who planned parties and kept homes tidy enough for unplanned guests are now working for pay full-time (usually more than 9-5). www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle...

The dreadful decline of hosting at home: ‘I feel shame any time a friend comes over’

It used to be quite normal to pop next door for a coffee or invite friends over for dinner. But not any more. What’s behind this change – and just how damaging is it?

Some utter bastard of an Audi Q2 driver (of course it's a fucking Audi) keeps parking in my (on street, unenforceable) disabled bay if I'm out after about 5pm. Today I couldn't park on my street (200m long) at all and had to park the next street over. I am krankt, as the Swedish say.

Also worth remembering that the school system was set up to train compliant workers for the factories, and that those days it's getting more and more inflexible in its expectations (yes, I know, we're more inflexible than the Victorians. Think on that for a bit)

I had a colonoscopy yesterday and of course I wrote about the experience. Come read why my colonoscopy was not bad at all, why I encourage those of you putting it off to actually schedule it if you can, and what a teddy bear has to do with the whole experience: whatever.scalzi.com/2026/10/08/c...

Colonoscopy Post-Mortem

First, so as not to bury the lede: It went great, there’s nothing in my colon they are the least bit concerned about, and I don’t have to come back for another colonoscopy for a decade,…

There was an AI summary in a document I had to use today (marked as such, made by someone else) and the word salad made me so angry that I rewrote it because fuck that shit. So many unnecessary superlatives in a technical document. Urgh!

I have capitulated to my body, it's very unhappy and I am very, very tired and riding the knife edge of burnout. I'm lucky I can call in sick to work, so I've done this and am going to take a few days to try to recover.

I am very annoyed that I am still awake. I've rested, had a massage, a shower, went to bed 4 hours ago. Now drinking milk as I'm hungry. I'm wide awake. I can only presume my hormones are yet again to blame. Sigh.

I read the first book of the Man Who Is Lorge And Hits The Baddies. Perfectly reasonable book. It will be nice to read them now and then. I do enjoy the premise, the mental gymnastics I did to reconcile him being born in the early '60s and being 36 in the '90s though... Time is a weird soup.
