Folks, what are we doing about the real problem facing our country? The thing where you add a cite to Zotero when it's in first view, but then it's finally published and the date etc changes for the cite so now you're chasing down details which kind of defeats the purpose of a citation manager?

Not just STEM but global talent generally
I wrote last year about the US Administration's plans to eviscerate Optional Practical Training, America's largest single source of global STEM talent: www.piie.com/blogs/realti... That came to pass. The White House is sharpening its tools to shatter OPT, and thus kneecap many US universities.

Upwards of 200,00 people may have lost their jobs today; or will in the upcoming days. There is a palpable sense of fear among the Haitian community right now. They need your support.
My Haitian friend was just fired from his job. "They said I don't have a legal status now." This is likely happening to hundreds of thousands of people across this country today. Sick.

The public admission of the open looting of other sovereign UN member-states would have ended any other presidency since Truman. But alas, everyone in power has decided that he is One Special Boy & the laws, the Constitution, & our ratified international treaty commitments do not apply to him.
Trump to press on Airforce One: “We are taking billions and billions of dollars from Venezuela. “That will happen with Iran too.”
Lindsey’s legacy will include the mass slaughter of Iranian children in a school at Minab on the opening day of the war. Congrats, Lindsey.

Americans have more confidence in higher education than in big tech companies, and the gap is growing rather than shrinking. The higher ed-doomsday pundits need to get on board with the real vibe shift in public trust that is happening right now.
I look forward to all the reports & coverage about all of the internal problems & mistakes of all of these other institutions, in the same way that universities are constantly blamed (& blaming themselves) for “declining trust.” “Compared to what?” news.gallup.com/poll/712436/...

The GOP made a similar claim in 2003. Since UN inspectors couldn't prove with certainty that Iraq eliminated its WMD program, there's a possibility WMDs exist and thus we should invade. This reverses the normal burden of proof when making claims. Everything hinges on the the word "possibility."
I'm reading the final three chapters of Karl Polanyi's Great Transformation with the most care I think ever & it's AWESOME. Ch 19: Popular Gov't & Market Economy -On socialism Ch 20: History in the Gear of Social Change -Covers fascism Ch 21: Freedom in a Complex Society -Inspiring future vision
You might get sick of hearing this but if he keeps doing it I'm gonna keep saying it: this is an unconstitutional impoundment, violating both Congress' Article I spending authority and the 1974 Impoundment Control act, and immediately impeachable.

Made it through @josephinequinn.bsky.social's How the World Made the West and it is fantastic. Makes the idea of connected histories very accessible imo. Initially surprised the book *ends* around 1500, but presents really compelling argument that world became, in a sense, *less* connected then.
Another reason to join the ICC is that it would resolve an underlying tension here. We don’t arrest foreign heads of state when they travel to the UN, but the same agreement that protects them in that instance can’t protect them from arrest under a different instrument of the larger UN architecture

I'm seeing similar patterns as a journal editor. The number folk who can't be bothered to check if their citations are real is stunning. It's the first thing I look at now. Also, if there's more than a couple of "it's not X, it's Y" in a manuscript, you're not editing very well.
The anatomy of an AI-supported academic article is becoming more apparent. I desk reviewed ~70 manuscripts this week for our journal. Reckon 20ish had significant AI assistance. On top of hundreds of others recently I'm starting to see patterns. Are other editors are seeing the same or similar? 1/
