Publishers making their product measurably worse so that they can say they're using AI and charge everyone more money. It's not even niche behaviour these days.
Grumpy Philosopher@stevecooke.org · 2d agoSodding Wiley now float an offer of an 'AI companion' to give commentary over journal articles you're trying to read. In order to get rid of it, you have to click, maximising the fucking thing, & then dismiss it. They make their website & published research worse to push AI garbage, arghh.
I mean, a spam journal will publish literally anything if you give them money. I really don't think we need a research article to answer this question.
There's something ironic in the fact that LAW journals are the most frequent case I am observing that publish their research publicly without any sort of open access license or policy. Law students and lawyers apparently have no idea what they are doing regarding copyright. #OpenAccess #Copyright

I always like to say AI/LLM because a lot of the time, if all you can see the final result, it is hard to tell if the system is using LLM (think GPT) or some other form of "AI", traditional ML/NLP. Take for example Primo's Natural language search and Web of Science smart search both by Clarivate.(1)

Glad I finished my online MA right before chatgpt was released because they sound worthless now (not that distance courses ever had the same appreciation as in-person).
Andrew Heiss@andrew.heiss.phd · 4w agowoof ≈80% of assignments this summer term have essentially been just raw chatgpt/claude output, including assignments that required designing stuff in illustrator/affinity/canva. The battle is lost for asynchronous online courses.

Good news, but the fact that this is only happening now, nearly three years after the cyber attack shows 1) what a huge job BL staff have had rebuilding services, 2) that the BL is underfunded, and 3) the impact this has had on academic research, especially in the humanities.
