"Pronouns used to be a funny joke, Hank. Until the government tried to tell me I couldn't use them anymore. So now I'm adamant about making sure trans people are gendered right. Not for their sake. But because I'll be damned if the US government is going to tell me what words I can and can't use."

In 1986, contracting HIV meant you were going to die, usually slowly, painfully, and alone. Now it's a chronic illness like hypertension. In 1986, gay and lesbian couples couldn't have their relationships legally recognized and had to adopt elaborate legal workarounds.

Food, man. Food is so much better than it was in 1986. All of it. Poor-people food, restaurant food, fresh food, frozen food. Food is just a hell of a lot better.

air travel is one of those experiences that has gotten monotonically worse over my entire lifetime

question though: has *anything* in the last 40+ years genuinely gotten *better*?

like, there's *more* stuff, sure, but is any of it *better*?

Somebody asked me on Reddit why people who use AI to generate Recomp projects are currently being rejected from the communities and what they can do to fix this. I might tweak parts of this to be a more general blog post at some point, but this should be of help to anyone in a similar situation.

A big reason all this AI crap is so disheartening too is that it's infested so many things at once. At least bad trends in film or music usually only tangentially affect other things. This AI shit's in just about everything. Why the fuck is it in sports?!

I literally just peaked at the Scritchy Scratchy thread on the AP server and the mods are ripping someone apart for asking if gen AI is used in the AP world and other AP worlds they’re interested in playing. Jesus fucking christ something needs to change on that server.

I just caught up with the AP discourse and I’m tired of this grandpa. So far to my knowledge that none of the games I play are vibe-coded and will be vigilant for new games in the future.

Australia’s eSafety commissioner buried a report (released Friday afternoon) that shows the under 16 social media ban didn’t tangibly reduce teen social media use, and also resulted in parents tuning out of kids usage. We traded our privacy for no reason. theconversation.com/more-than-80...

More than 80% of kids still using social media despite ban, new eSafety report finds

The report provides more evidence Australia’s world-leading social media ban isn’t going to plan.

Man any time I see someone like "Here's this thing we used AI for part of but don't worry we didn't use AI for these other things" it's so often really just telling on themselves. So often they really don't think any of it is bad or understand the problem, they just don't want the backlash

One day people will stop unironically using the intentionally ironic phrase "technically correct, the best kind of correct". A, the joke was to mock bureaucrats who believe more in technicalities than practicality. B, It's not even true. Most people will never care a tomato is botanically a fruit.

I like how in this age of questionable music videos I can just count on Primus to put out some weird shit (complement) Les Claypool's son Cage put together in Blender over the song

I found the original sound source of the piano used for "To Zanarkand" from Final Fantasy X. The hardware version is the KORG Kronos German Grand preset. There's a VST version you can get called SGX-2. Here's the original MIDI data played through the VST (with a little adjustment for velocities).
