JBP may well have apologised elsewhere and I haven’t seen it. And I have no reason to believe his conversion isn’t genuine. But I do think it’s interesting to have written a personal essay on what it was like to be an antisemite and not think to mention how the victims might be feeling

It infuriates me that Labour people are arguing for this kind of shit. It will limit life chances of the people they care about. It's bleeding obvious.
Because, thing is, often those people have just developed at different rates, are neurodiverse, or simply haven't found the right environment or thing. And even if they don't, everyone needs a basic academic grounding, and there is value in learning in and of itself
Speaking as Bluesky's resident 'went to a secondary modern' person my view is that if you're arguing strongly to bring them back either while: a) Claiming less intellectually capable people get nothing out of academic education b) With only reference to grammar pupils Then you're, at best, a snob
Water is life. We are running out of it. The privatised water companies have never had an incentive to do anything about this. In fact, the scarcer water is, the higher the prices they can charge. Not fixing leaks, not investing in capture and retention, etc is good business for them.
JWexTheSpa@jwsidders.bsky.social · 3d agoWe are at a point at which emergency legislation forcing water companies to do exactly as instructed by government - leak targets, water capture and retention targets, water cleanliness targets, reservoir construction targets, etc - is not only justified but absolutely necessary.
Maybe us less young folk could make a few sacrifices for the greater good, like the younger generation still having a livable planet when they're our age. Like not driving a tank to b&q, or being able to look at a solar farm without having a tantrum, or making that village fete poster ourselves
Yes lockdown was really tough for kids. Lots of those kids are teenagers now so maybe as a thank you our establishments could stop deliberately making even more things worse for them due to a weird systemic hatred of our own youth

But it's a bit late for UEFA to now complain that the game is being sold down the river when that's exactly what they have overseen these last 30 years or so. I think the whole structure governing the game should be dismantled and a better way found to manage things going forward.
When people say "football isn't for sale", it's worth pointing out that it was sold decades ago. Infantino is just taking it all to its logical conclusion. If people really care about the game, it's about time someone looked at the role of big money in the national leagues - especially the PL.

I suspect Andy Burnham would like the Supreme Court to reverse the proscription of Palestine Action. That way he can get out of the mess that proscription has created, and without having to make a radical decision of his own.

Notice how incredibly silly it is that we have the police warning people not to commit terrorist offences, waiting quietly for them to reveal a t-shirt or something, and then arresting old people under anti-terror powers, who quite placidly accept being arrested.
Is “pragmatic” the new, “grown up” word? Andy, there’s nothing “pragmatic” about drilling for more oil & gas - to even consider it with the planet literally on fire is total madness. How many times must we say it will do nothing for energy bills or security? It would be an act of utter recklessness

Norwich is drying out while water bosses cash in. Anglian Water’s CEO banked a £500k "retention payment" - a loophole round the bonus ban - just as East Anglia was declared in drought. They'll keep filling their pockets as our reservoirs empty until we get public ownership.
I haven’t seen his actual words, but if Burnham did say that drilling would ease cost of living, he’s not ‘admitting’ it, he’s either lying or an idiot. You can’t ‘admit’ something that isn’t true.
Even BP thinks its money is better spent elsewhere than in the North Sea. Why would any sane government think they know better ?
