Beloved banjo player of the people. Co-owner and CTO of an apparel ERP company. In former lives: open source, Perl, O'Reilly Media, new technology. Bereavement is sadder and weirder than you can imagine.

Brilliant letter from Stuart Thompson to Jeremy Clarkson about his comments that benefit claimants should write weekly thank you letters to tax payers detailing how they spend their benefits each week.

ANTHROPIC: Our son loves humanity and for the low price of trillions and trillions of dollars will usher in an era of unprecedented peace and prosperity! OPENAI: Our horrible oafish son is hacking web sites without our permission. ANTHROPIC: (eyes narrowing) Our son is also evil

Just saying, from a point of view of anti-authoritarian streaks in us as a people, there aren't many countries with an official National Monument for Conscientious Objectors. The UK for example, has a memorial stone.

For at least twenty years, in every hotel I've stayed in, if there's a Bible I've signed it 'Cheers for believing, all the best, Jesus'. As a full-time touring musician it's well past the thousand mark by now.

"As I conclude my term as Children’s Commissioner, one message I want to strongly emphasise is this: these negative childhood health outcomes are preventable. The hardships experienced by children reflect the priorities the Government sets and the policies it chooses to invest in." #votethemout

The plight of our children can't wait for politics

Children can't vote but inherit the consequences of government and societal failures for the longest time, writes outgoing Children's Commissioner Claire Achmad in a final plea

My better half has been in America for two months, which would make you think we haven't been able to play music together. You'd be wrong! We've been doing shows in Second Life ("Still A Thing"™️) through the miracle of double streaming. Old nerdage explaining "double streaming" follows.

Using lists of three is not an "AI tell." It's a common trait in human writing because our brains biologically want to make sure there's always one thing to marry, one thing to fuck, and one thing to murder.

@softwaredoug.bsky.social re: softwaredoug.com/blog/2026/07... . This is my current quest, too. I'm reading a lot of ACT books at the moment -- "Acceptance and Commitment Therapy" which seems pretty cool. Half is "sad/etc thoughts happen, don't fight them, figure out what you'll do when they arrive"

Don’t ask what you want. Ask who you want to be

A revelation has occured to me. Don’t obsess about what you want. Figure out who you want to be.

bought candy at the pool for a 13yo and she tried to give me cash. i was like nahh it's nbd, and she goes "girl i have seen your car." 13yo girls remain undefeated. you think you're talking to a child but you're actually talking to whatever gods used to send to punish mortals for their hubris

I've taken the Farm Journal's Complete Pie Cookbook down from the shelf. Tonight's menu includes the Steak and Onion pie (p. 249) and the Double Good Blueberry pie (p. 62). I add some diced carrots to the steak and onion. Nothing bad every came out of these recipes, properly followed. 😋🥧

Avocados come in 2 varieties - A-types start each day female and switch to male midday. B-types do the reverse. In work just published from the last chapter of my PhD, we show this system evolved 40+million yrs ago and is regulated by alleles of 1 transcription factor www.pnas.org/doi/10.1073/...

It’s a Fair Question….. “Why is it that it takes 900 years and 5000 impact studies to build high speed rail but a 5 minute city council meeting is all it takes to approve a massive data center?”

Ok, so NZ's Temu Trump fired off a racist diatribe that will leave you slackjawed. It's awful. AND ... you've got to see what set him off. He was moaning about NZ's COVID response again, and dog-whistling vaccination risks. This is the first time in that debate that he spoke.
