The reason why Himesh Patel wouldn’t work in this particular version of They Odyssey is because the film’s central metaphor for the fall of western civilization would backfire so hard if Odysseus was POC and not white.
EMILY WILSON@emilyrcwilson.bsky.social · last wk.In this piece, I regret the paragraph about the uses of the POC actors - who are all great, but IMO under-utilized (and why couldn‘t Himesh Patel be Odysseus instead?) I still think the film largely wastes its strong cast, but I framed it badly.
Ok one thing I will say is that when I watched that scene what immediately struck was the SOUND of women screaming. You don’t see what is happening to them but it is the loudest sound you hear, the whole time.

This is an odd point to me, given that I found the entire war as presented to be a squalid, poisoned event that has brought everyone involved with it harm despite its glorification
My take on today's Odyssey controversy is, with all respect to everyone involved, that plumbers generally shouldn't review movies about plumbing.

If we were still a proper country, there’d be a raunchy, affable comedy about a group of bros getting hopelessly lost on the way home from their road trip to see a 70mm IMAX screening of The Odyssey that loosely follows the same story beats released around the same time as Nolan’s film.
