This is a critical observation. Only Christians alshould be more desparate to end Trumpism than capitalists. Trump is a threat to everyone, but for those groups, he threatens to corrupt their way of life so completely that it remains broken for generations after he's gone.

The question to ask once you’re no-longer-convinced change is hopeless is “okay, so we need to do tremendously big things. How do we do that, together?” And that’s where the accentuate-the-positive schtick ends up obscuring much more than it reveals.

man I will just never get over the fact that the collective response to the pandemic, and an absolutely miraculous vaccine development, was to destroy public health in this country and smear everyone involved I generally take a positive view of humanity overall but it's so depressing

A very serious Rural Politico once told me "Dems have to go to farmer meetings! We gotta be where the people are!" I was in fact in a farmer meeting at that very moment! So I live-texted him the meeting. They were complaining that they want indentured workers that they don't have to pay or feed.

The direct impacts of extreme heat will cause thousands of excess deaths every year, and these will increase as the years go by. We can also expect increasingly severe flooding, ruining lives and communities, and making whole regions uninsurable.

Amazing to see some evidence that people might remember that the price of something can influence whether we buy it!

It's absolute coalitional poison, but people tend to fight over status within an institution rather than fight to enhance the power of the institution. One of those laws of organizational politics.

I like to point out that taxes are a way of buying critical services at a huge discount, and we can't afford how low our taxes are. I missed a chance to beat this drum on that budget post with the $90 private school fee. You could get high quality education for much less than that, with taxes

R2D2 is a competent autonomous swiss army knife, but not a subservient human. C3PO isn't competent, but is a subservient humanoid. If you have a real problem, you want R2D2. If your main problem is wishing you had servants, you want C3PO. (this is about Optimus)

She either: does not have a clue how important universities are to the local economy; knows but doesn’t care because of some sort of ‘anti-elitist’ brainworm; or knows but is too worried to admit it lest it upset Reform voters. none reflect very well on her!

A corollary: If you work in software and believe the AI bubble will collapse, it may be worth thinking about how to move other compute-intensive work to GPUs. That wasn't worth the cost 10 years ago, but if the AI bubble pops, there will be a ton of under-loaded GPUs for rent dirt cheap.

Worth note that data centers that are generally useful are mostly full of CPUs, RAM and storage. New ones, mostly full of GPUs, are much less genetally useful. There are some good use cases for headless GPU compute outside AI, but without AI we are *radically* overbuilding GPU clusters.

I know to some extent you are exaggerating for effect but this is entirely too sanguine.

I used to be really confused by the type of people who complain most about defending meritocracy. I think I understand it now. Many of these people are trying to convince themselves that they deserve their own success, more stridently when it's obvious to introspection that they don't.
