"The ugly meaning of collaborator carries an implication of treason: betrayal of one’s nation, ideology, morality, values. It was Graham who played golf w/Trump, made excuses for him, supported the president even as he slowly destroyed the American alliances that Graham had defended all his life."

Lindsey Graham was one of the main subjects of a @theatlantic.com cover story I wrote in 2020, on why people collaborate with regimes they know are immoral. Here's a gift link: www.theatlantic.com/magazine/arc...

"The conservatives of our times, who, to-day, are making the most ostentatious demonstrations of their veneration for the Declaration, are filled with distress and horror at the thought of 'radicalism'.... Blind, selfish, besotted idolators of the past!" William Lloyd Garrison, #otd, 1854

The conservatives of our times, who, to-day, are making the most ostentatious demonstrations of their veneration for the Declaration for 1776, are filled with distress and horror at the thought of "radicalism," either in Church or State. Blind, selfish, besotted idolators of the past! If that Declaration is worthy of your homage, then you are committed in principle to the most radical political instrument in the world; by which outlawry is pronounced against every oppressive government, and therefore against every existing government on the face of the earth, for they are all oppressive. In its denunciation of injustice and tyranny, in its vindication of human equality and freedom, that Declaration is not American, but universal—not geographical, but world-wide. To that extent it is to be maintained.

I will once again remind folks that a very sizable chunk of what looks like Congress not doing anything to push back against the president is in fact a consequence of the Court disabling/destroying all the ways Congress has tried to push back.

I was really sad to hear about Dave Rohde's passing. Dave was, of course, an incredible scholar. He was also a great advisor and so many of us owe him a debt of gratitude for helping launch our careers. When I'm puzzled by something, I'll often think to myself, what would Dave do. It usually helps.

The richest man owns X. The second and third richest men control Google. The fourth richest man owns The Washington Post. The seventh richest man owns Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp. And now the sixth richest could soon take over both Paramount and Warner Bros. See the problem here?

Wealth concentration was already way off the rails before Musk became a trillionaire. The wealthiest megabillionaires in the country have basically been doubling their wealth annually in recent years. Feels near impossible to maintain a liberal democracy in this kind of situation.

When Trump went to war with Iran, I watched every speech anyone in the administration gave and made a chart of every reason given for going to war "Eliminate ballistic capability" was the #1 reason given: more even than preventing Iran from getting a nuclear weapon
