Totally normal lil freak kiwi

32/they/🥝 furry, nerdy, and will draw too many OCs. Occasionally known to be friendly if offered a free beverage or a bag of chips. Just an artist learning some new skills!

John Darnielle of The Mountain Goats offered an explanation that makes the most sense to me. My paraphrase: nursing is a huge, highly in-demand profession that offers a pathway to economic stability (particularly to women) that you can get into with test-prep effort rather than academic prowess

I honestly have a lot to say about this, and it goes a couple of directions. In the nursing program I attended, we had great teachers and many great young nurses. But pedagogically, the model was absolutely "teaching to the test"

I will never, ever understand anti-VAX nurses. 27% of hospital staff is huge. Why the resistance is nurses and other staff but not doctors raises the question the nature of nursing education and how the day to day doesn’t seem to reinforce the science aspect of the training.

What that means is there was information you were going to need to pass the state boards, and, culturally in the program & within the curriculum, the assumption was that you wanted this information strictly for the purposes of passing the exams, and, later, the state boards.

If you wanted to be class valedictorian & shine like a star in the field down the road, word to Joel, you could do that! But most people don't want to do that (why? getting there), and, when they got out into the workplace, you'd see 'em --

evangelizing to actively delusional patients on a mental health unit (I saw this myself; my charge nurse was trying to teach me to do the same), rote CYA charting as useless as the day is long, active contempt for the extant treatment modalities. Depressing & widespreaduser avatar

the problem was not, and is not, "nurses." It's the need for job stability & security, and the need for the economy to supply workers to hospitals. that's how we end up with anti-vax nurses.

Get full employment, get full housing, do like Jesus said to do and feed & clothe & house everybody, and the number of people willing to go through nursing school to get out in the field and be terrible at it will plummet

in the interim, yes, it'd help if, pedagogically, nursing programs were able to convey that it matters more for us to understand the principles in play than to pass the test --

but how can we say that with a straight face to people who just want to make sure they pay rent, have food on the table, and don't drown in a sea of rising costs? "you need to care" is a cold thing to tell a person walking a wire with no safety nets underneath

So the problem, as most will have gathered, is capitalism, which can't be dismantled in a day, but whose thumbprint -- whose toxic mix of "the individual matters more than the community" and "you'd better make some money or you'll starve" has a thousand faces,

I think most nurses are good people but what's the deal with like 15 percent of them being complete freaks who believe every conspiracy theory, including those that contradict their own medical practice?

Art tip: don't share everything you draw. Draw things you never intend to show anyone. Your brain needs time to just exist in a state that's not about performing for strangers. This used to be the normal way to exist before social media poisoned us.

This is my official "if we're mutuals on here and play the same games, I will always be down to try and game together" post the only downside is you WILL be subjected to my gremlin voice. So far the only games that come to mind is PEAK + Slay the Spire 2. Considering getting Big Walk sometime soon!
