Limiting overshoot and returning back to below 1.5°C is still possible and worth fighting for. Carbon dioxide removal (CDR) is no longer a choice, but a necessity - so both deep fossil phase-out and negative emissions are absolutely essentially. Our science-based statement on the Paris targets 👇

The road back to Paris: The world will likely exceed 1.5°C within the next decade. Science shows it’s still possible to return below this limit by century’s end. 🚨🚨🚨 NEW REPORT ALERT 🚨🚨🚨 @climateanalytics.org has a new report out today that I’m really excited about. It’s all about 1.5ºC... ▶️ Is overshooting 1.5ºC inevitable? ▶️ Can we still get temperatures back below 1.5ºC? ▶️ If so, how? If you’re interested in our findings, buckle up for a mega thread...

⚡ New paper in @natcomms.nature.com on decarbonizing the hard-to-electrify sectors! Which abatement option is most cost-efficient for the steel, cement, chemical, or long-distance transport sectors? In this paper, we explore the mitigation landscape of each sector. 🔗 Article: rdcu.be/ejLI0

Exploring techno-economic landscapes of abatement options for hard-to-electrify sectors

Nature Communications - Abatement options for hard-to-electrify sectors (e.g., steel, aviation) face uncertainty in future costs and feasibility. This techno-economic analysis shows that despite...

Fun fact: iron & steel-making in China produces about 2x the total GHG emissions as China's entire transportation sector, and cement production is about equal to transportation. So while CO2 prices in China's ETS are expected to be modest, including these sectors under emissions caps is a big deal.

China’s government has plans to add steel, aluminum, and cement producers to the set of entities covered by emissions cap and trade schemes by the end of 2025 www.bloomberg.com/news/article... 🔌💡

‼️The US-based @ipcc.bsky.social technical support unit (TSU) for Working Group 3 Co-Chairs has been terminated, and the US won’t be attending next week’s IPCC meeting where the AR7 chapter outlines will be approved. More by @afreedma.bsky.social here:

🚨 If confirmed, horrible news for science-based policy advice: The IPCC WG3 - which deals with strategies for reaching climate goals - about to get defunded.

Latest German energy statistics allow an early peak on CO2 balance for 2024. Coal declines, but this along with changes in oil and gas use this will translate to a mere 15 MtCO2 decline relative to 2023 (own estimate). Germany needs twice as much, 30 MtCO2 per year, to reach its -65% goal in 2030.
