Mika Rantanen@mikarantane.bsky.social · 4mo agoRecord-warm March after an unusually dry and snow-poor winter has pushed nationwide snow amounts to unprecedentedly low levels. Snowmelt is occurring more than a month earlier than usual. Normally, these snow depths would be present around May Day.
From March 15 through March 26 there have been... More than 100 monthly records & more than 700 daily records broken or tied. Since March 1 there have been more than 1,100 daily records broken or tied across the nation. Some record heat will remain through the weekend for areas of the Southwest.

This is a list of (some) locations that tied or broke their all-time *April* monthly temperature record in March 2026 during the record-shattering heatwave. Statistically and meteorologically, that is extraordinarily hard to achieve locally--let alone across such a vast region.
The most extreme U.S. March heatwave on record is now nearing an end. For the first time in 9 days, #Phoenix stayed below 100F (37.8C). Nevertheless, additional records were set. Below are some March 2026 values that reached or exceeded April Monthly records during the #heatwave.
The heat didn’t just impact CO… it’s been very impactful across a large portion of the US. I often see complaints about mets “hyping Heat” or “never” talking about record lows. Well look at the stats, they are pretty self explanatory. Record highs are FAR outnumbering lows. It’s not hype. #facts

These snowpack stats are insane… truly… We can see Longs Peak and Mount Meeker from our house and it’s been really weird to not see them both topped with snow for more than a couple days at a time this “winter”.
Kyle Thiem@kylethiem.bsky.social · 4mo agoThe REAL insanity is how early these levels are occurring: • Mean SWE on March 26th was 4.9" • Through the period of record going back to 1987, the earliest we’ve ever recorded levels this low was APRIL 24TH • The date these levels are typically observed is MAY 26TH 🧵 5/9 #cowx

I'm not sure most folks are aware of the immense magnitude of loss this would entail for the global weather and climate community, and beyond. NCAR has played a greater cumulative role in advancing weather prediction and atmospheric modeling than perhaps any other single entity in the world.
When you ask weather/climate people to name places that act as a hub of lifesaving research and innovation, Boulder CO would rise to top 2-3. NCAR Mesa Lab is the heartbeat of activities there. Can’t believe this is even on the table, let alone being lobbed out there like it’s already a certainty.

Before the 1990s, plane crashes caused by microbursts used to kill planeloads of people fairly regularly. Dr. Ted Fujita and NCAR scientists figured out how to detect microbursts and warn pilots about them. Since then? Zero airliner crashes from microbursts.
