Wrote a book about a bird (the Eastern Curlew, 2018), a river (A Clear Flowing Yarra, 2023), and a global existential crisis or three (Questions Raised By Quolls, 2021).

It was always strange to call the genocide in Gaza a war, but it's even more bizarre when there is a ceasefire and Israel has killed 1200 Palestinians since then. Even if the Guardian doesn't want to use the term genocide "war" doesn't capture one sided slaughter of civilians

Besides being Canberra icons, it’s a lot harder to destroy these than the heritage 1930s wooden bus shelters like the one on Schlich St, Yarralumla that mysteriously burned down in 1993 just after someone built a huge house opposite it whose lake views it obstructed 👀 www.abc.net.au/news/2026-08...

'Icon of our history': Canberra bus shelters added to heritage register

Canberra's bus shelters were described as "concrete monstrosities" when installed in 1975 but have since been noted for their brutalist architectural style and functionality.

Stumbled across an account on TikTok that just seems to be posting videos of people’s worst moments: mental health episodes, psychosis, drug use - all Melbourne based. The account has thousands of followers. It’s not a compassionate account: the non-consensual images are posted as entertainment

If you catch a Hurstbridge train between Greensborough and Montmorency Stations you’ll pass a row of businesses on Para Road. Most are dilapidated, some permanently closed - and one, conspicuously, is gleaming and thriving. There’s profit in genocide and if you push back, they’ll throw away the key.

Mama pseudoscorpion & her cute baby high in the mountains of Montana. Mama is half the size of a grain of rice. These harmless micro arachnids have no stinger, but can deliver venom to prey via their pincers. Also, they can walk backward. Also, you probably have them in your house. #BugSky 🐙🌿

A macro photo looking down at a mother pseudoscorpion and her baby. They're on a patch of pebbly, sandy substrate. These arachnids look kind of like regular scorpions but without a tail and stinger, which means they are to regular scorpions what corgis are to collies. The mama is dark orange with reddish-orange pincers, while the tiny baby facing her is translucent, with a bluish white cephalothorax and pale yellow abdomen.

You can/should read Emily Wilson's latest take on the Odyssey, but I'm logging on to convey my hairdresser's reaction. She was AGHAST that Nolan, with his million $ budget, gave Matt Damon ONLY 6 hair extensions. As a result, his hair did not blow around properly, & that ruined the film for her.

Didn’t want to embarrass the person who posted this by quoting it but I wish Thomas Violence was on BlueSky so that he could appreciate that someone has kindly and thoughtfully and with admirable sincerity anonymised his pseudonymous screenname and his profile picture of the actor Michael Stuhlbarg:

A screenshot of the famous Thomas Violence twitter thread in which he said “tonight a 19ish year old in the bar very nicely asked me if I could give them a refund on a vodka coke they bought because they realised they were too drunk and drinking it would be a bad idea, a move both so ballsy and sincere I couldn’t possibly refuse” and someone replies “Umm… I thought in all US states you must be at least 21 years old in order to purchase alcohol?” and Thomas Violence replies with the instantly immortal tweet: “I’m one of the dozens of people worldwide that live in a country that’s not America”.

Except the usernames of both posters have been blacked out, and a black bar has also been put across the eyes of Thomas Violence’s profile picture of the actor Michael Stuhlbarg.

Nigel Farage just took a question from a 'journalist' at his press conference, who turned out to be his former chief adviser Raheem Kassam, who asks him why the media are being so unfair to him

Last week I visited Tim Young at his farm in Norfolk. He and his family have been tracking the rainfall on their Norfolk farm since 1976, and the data shows the last six years have seen two-thirds the amount of rain compared with previous years. www.theguardian.com/environment/...
