The headlines are still covering the cyclosporiasis outbreak from lettuce, but let's talk about a different summer, long ago. The headlines in Bavaria would have called it "summer diarrhea" & it was killing babies. Enter our hero, Professor Theodor Escherich of the Julius Hospital, Würzburg.

I am a molecular biologist, I study DNA in tiny tubes and cells in dishes. This story had me in tears. There is so much to unpack. Parents thinking disability is worse than death for their child. Scientists failing to examine risks. Terrible study design. Journals failing to catch issues.

What a harrowing story and an incredible work of #scicomm in the reporting. 🧪 www.science.org/content/arti...

In @ukri.org STFC webinar at the moment. Ian Chapman is explaining the need for budget changes, which won't be applied evenly across all programmes. Budgeting for UKRI to provide an additional £135m over 3 years to give time to put STFC on a sustainable pathway

An interesting read about the 1976 heatwave 🌞 The suggestion that “we all had a wonderful summer and survived” is misleading. It was reported that “200 people a day were apparently dying who would not have died if the weather had been normal”. theconversation.com/the-dangers-... #heatwave

The dangers of romanticising Britain’s 1976 heatwave

By sentimentalising the summer of 1976, we strip away its lessons.

Leishmaniases comprise clinically distinct diseases caused by the protozoan parasite leishmania, transmitted through the bite of infected sand flies. A new review summarizes current approaches and recent advances in the diagnosis and treatment of leishmaniasis. Full review: https://nej.md/4nPCWn6

The image is a section from the New England Journal of Medicine titled "Key Points" about leishmaniasis. It explains that leishmaniasis is transmitted by infected sand flies, with increasing cases in the Eastern Mediterranean region. Asymptomatic cases are common but can become severe without treatment. HIV infection is a risk factor. Laboratory diagnosis involves sample culturing or species identification using genetics. Treatment is hampered by limited drug options. A recent advance is the use of combination
therapies for the treatment of visceral leishmaniasis. Two leishmaniasis vaccines are undergoing preclinical testing or are ready for testing in humans.
