Great to see that National support 30 weeks Paid Parental Leave. Especially after they voted against the introduction of PPL. Blocked the extension to 26 weeks for several years. Canceled 33 pay equity claims. And just this year, cut Best Start payments for the majority of new parents.

The new 12.5% tariffs imposed by Trump on New Zealand require a very simple response: The cancellation of all deals on US arms. Start with the insanely expensive deal on the helicopters.

The High School I work for struggles to find staff each year to take on the added labour of training teachers on placement from various ITE centres near us. One has made a recent quite desperate plea below. They haven't found mentor teachers for 40% of their trainees!!! 1/

Every placement makes a difference so if your school has the capacity to host our kaiako tauira or take additional students, please get in touch at your earliest convenience. With placement start date fast approaching (PP3 start date Monday 24 August), we are still looking at finding placements for 40% of our cohort. So, an urgent consideration from our partner schools would be greatly appreciated.

Really common practice in authoritarian states is to "work towards the leader". Whereby the leader doesn't have to give specific orders but officials pursue programmes that push their organisation towards the leader's goals. Which is bad, but I'm not sure it is any better or worse.
