This is tremendous thread on what I think is THE key issue of our time- accountability. humility. being human. writing, teaching, learning, living and most of all, science! these are all *human* endeavors. the mess is the point, not the noise.we must embrace it and keep passing it on, celebrating it

There is no place for LLMs in ANY step of the process because these are tools that are built on theft of creative work. As scientists we should be rejecting the use of LLMs! We should be holding a higher standard because it’s right.

Not sure if it’s deliberate or not on the part of ACS, but these are some of the shapes that stand out for me when I look at the logo. From top to bottom, diffraction, atom and electron density plot (or standing wave). I tend to think in shapes, so maybe it’s just me….
Actually, I don’t mind the new logo too much. As a person who is 23 years as an ACS member outside the US is does signify something a little more global. And I didn’t even know what the apparatus thingy in the old logo was until last year…so for me this one resonates more.
Thoughts on the ACS rebrand? I’m sad they lost the kaliapparat. It’s a great teaching moment. I like what they did with the color scheme but wish there was a green for us to use.

There’s also something to how women are socialized to be suspicious of flattery — it’s how we transfer responsibility for men’s desire onto women’s bodies; we are taught to defend against that in service to our “innocence” or whatever — whereas men accept flattery as their due. Perfect marks.

In the same week a Black debut author lost a $2.4 million dollar deal over (so far unsubstantiated) “vibes” accusations of AI usage, seeing influencers rally around and make calls for nuance around Hank Green openly using ChatGPT for his work is a perfect illustration of white privilege in action.

Is it bad that I have not heard of Hank Green? As a professional science communicator?
I know many of us knitters already lost a lot of respect for Hank Green a while ago—but this is SO much worse. I hope science writers & science content creators are taking note. Want to go from someone who is trusted to having very little credibility? Using LLMs is a great way to achieve that.
I feel like a disappointed parent but I do appreciate that Hank Green was honest and admitted to his dependence on LLMs/genAI. Socials the pressure to post more than you actually can physically is high. But this is Hank Green. He can post slowly with the correct research and still do fine.
I work at a public library. People who want to use AI seem to have no trouble doing so. People who don't want to use AI have a harder time. Restarted his PhD. Finished despite in five years in 2022. Applied for OPT and stayed for three years on it until he transition to a TN Visa in 2025. TEN YEARS ON AN F-1 paying taxes, doing science for this country. Starting a family. Doing everything to the letter. Today that path is gone
For people that lack the experience/context I arrived to the US in 2014 in an F-1 visa and finished my program in exactly 5 years. Additionally I was under OPT for 1 year. That means 6 years total under F-1 My husband arrived in 2014. Was forced to master out in 2017. Worked in OPT 6mo 1/n
