I can afford better things *right now*, it’s just that if I lose my job and can’t afford medical bills I will be regretting those purchases. I’d be willing to bet that anxiety borne out of lack of societal safety net drives this more than preference

Amanda Mull@amandamull.bsky.social · 2d ago

Like, you cannot fully understand what the system does and why it works until you understand there is a very real preference among a very real portion of the population—mainly people who CAN afford better things and simply choose not to buy them—for inexpensive things with a known quality deficit

I have no dog in this fight (haven’t seen the movie and don’t really care to), but Stephen King hated Kubrick’s interpretation of The Shining. One can have a different vision of a work without it necessarily being a slight to the source material or other interpretations, especially btwn mediums

Simply do not understand this new definition of film criticism where your opinion counts less the more you know about the source material.

Today's Prospect Patriot is Frances Perkins. She saw the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory go ablaze in 1911 and her life changed. "The New Deal was born that day," she said. 22 years later she'd be America's first female cabinet member. prospect.org/2026/08/04/a...

Frances Perkins: The Architect of Social Security - The American Prospect

In her words, Frances Perkins, the first woman cabinet secretary, ‘came to Washington to work for God, FDR, and the millions of forgotten, plain, common workingmen.’

there are actual problems that RFK speaks to so yeah I don’t see why it’s a problem to try and address those while simultaneously showing he’s a grifter. Even progressives are going to have to try and pick up some misinformed constituencies and not just say fuck off to everyone who falls for a con

There is pervasive corruption across our healthcare and agricultural systems that defy party lines. I meet with MAHA activists because a lot of their concerns are bipartisan issues that major corporations paint as partisan. The fight isn't left and right, it's top and bottom.

They're probably hoping you won't hear about this. But tomorrow in TX, Tarrant County officials meet to vote on a GOP plan to cut almost HALF of Election Day voting locations, plus 8 early voting locations, some of them on campuses. Not hard to guess why. fortworthreport.org/2026/07/30/t...

Tarrant County considers cutting 140 Election Day polling sites for November

County commissioners vote Aug. 4 on proposed reductions to the number of early voting and day-of sites for the midterms.

Only took a week or two for the right to move from “protecting women’s sports” to “no need for women’s sports, actually” post-BPJ. You might view this as a betrayal to the girls they were supposedly protecting, but the real betrayal is to their most loyal soldiers: volunteer child genital inspectors

Heritage Foundation now targeting women's sports after SCOTUS' anti-trans sports ruling - LGBTQ Nation

Project 2025's architects say that Title IX and women's sports harm men's sports and "feminine graces."

Cant reply but: if politicians are ok with shooting babies overseas, even a selfish person has to wonder if that politician actually has anyone’s back. Yeah, those babies are brown and far away, but that’s not leagues more abstract than the average voter is to the average corporate politician

IMO the civilian death toll in Gaza is horrifying & settler violence in the West Bank inexcusable. I also think the Palestinians have been intransigent & unrealistic for too long, that the PA is corrupt and Hamas are terrorists. What bothers me is the excessive salience of the issue (to some).

It is funny that this person thinks “immigrants defended the union while native born whites sought to destroy it in the name of slavery” is an argument against immigrants being Americans. This is precisely the point, nothing about being born here makes you better bsky.app/profile/aphc...

Another datapoint for the fascist radicalisation of institutional pillars of much of the American Right

This is a bad piece. 1. It uncritically makes use of prosecution materials to piece together what activists thought and did 2. It whitewashes resistance in Minn, Chicago, and elsewhere 3. It betrays ignorance of movement history, from abolitionism through the panthers through M4BL

"Their actions ensured that they struggled to achieve sympathetic media coverage outside of a few left-wing outlets, struggled to attract material or legal support (the ACLU, for instance, refused to touch the case), and failed to achieve positive virality in the larger culture."
