Calling yourself a "content creator" or a "creative" is positioning yourself as a service provider within capitalism and actually preclude you from being an artist. Artists are selves in contention with problematic cultural narratives, not in service to them.

We need to stop saying shit like "IP" and "content" when we mean art. Don't let them strip the walls in your own brain, man.

The joy of ttrpgs, to me, is that anyone can hack them. After years of hearing people say "wouldn't it be cool if" about digital games and then sighing at the sheer ludicrousness of work involved, a medium where someone can suggest something at the table and then you can just do it, is bliss.

idk i think one of my big goals as a designer is that if you read my book and spend enough time playing , you can absolutely understand and deconstruct the philosophy that was used to make the game. it's not that hard to approach games with a game designer mindset! it's odd to try and gatekeep it

In a better world, in a more just world, there'd be a dedicated soda fountain in every Taco Bell with ALL of the Baja flavors on demand. You'd have one soda fountain with the standard pepsi assortment, and one with just 12-15 mountain dew varieties, each lab-tested to taste good with taco bell.

I don't trust that the non-Baja Blast "Baja" flavors of Mountain Dew were chemically tested in a lab to be delicious when paired with Taco Bell. This is why they are an ideological failure in my eyes.

thinking about player behavior and what's not necessary to communicate. in MotM, the text never asks players to make their own character, or to even give them a name. yet it happens. it's what we expected of TTRPGs though, so it doesn't need to be communicated. that doesn't always work though!

The modern equivalent of a heartbreaker isn’t some D&D clone with a couple interesting ideas that the creator splurged their life savings on. For better or worse, digital distribution makes it so that you don’t have to go bankrupt to make a game. (For better imho)

The modern equivalent of a heartbreaker is some game that no one has ever heard about that has amazing design principles that are innovative or elegant or just really well done, but that are languishing on itch because no one has ever thought to read it.

"This game's rules is frustrating to players" not as a failure state, but as a fecund site of intentional design / artistic possibility. I do think people have a hard time with this. It goes against orthodox, deeply held assumptions that friction between rules and players is Bad Design. 1/

The correct way to do a Plastic Man movie in the DCU would be to make it entirely 2D, hand-dawn animation, and then have the character appear in any live action projects as a Roger Rabbit-esque cartoon character. No one EVER remarks upon this fact, and it is NEVER explained.
