Legal immigration as most Americans conceive of it does not meaningfully exist in the United States. "Just come here the right way" is one of the most pernicious lies in contemporary US politics, accepted across the aisle as the goal of the immigration debate when it's impossible in reality.

we had an entire ICU team that was dedicated to flipping patients onto their bellies to give them a last shot at oxygenating before their inevitable deaths, but ok
RFK Jr said these words today on national television "There were ICUs that were empty all over the country including in New York at the height (of the pandemic)" hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha You are a fucking idiot hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha <sobs silently>
It's pretty infuriating that Trump is denying disaster aid to Oregon for political reasons and I have barely heard anything about it, while Biden was falsely accused of doing the exact same thing to North Carolina and millions of people believed that
I can't stress enough what a crisis this is. Trump's own intelligence agencies concluded that Iran attacked Minnesota's critical infrastructure and Trump is saying that it's Minnesota's own fault and denying it was Iran. The federal government won't defend blue states in a literal war.
U.S. Sees Iran as Likely Behind Cyberattack on Minnesota Water Systems (Gift Article)
Investigators cautioned that the assessment was preliminary. There were no indications that any water supply had been rendered unsafe to drink.

Like on the one hand we get deepfake child porn and misinformation. On the other hand we get to... let corporations put artists out of the job? Is this a good value proposition?
I feel like we just need to ban AI generation of images and video. I don't see any societally productive use for this technology and a LOT of ways it can be abused.
a future D administration should make an easy pathway to citizenship specifically for foreign students
One weird trick to literally destroy America www.wsj.com/politics/pol...
At least constitutionally, under such conditions, a 2027 situation where Trump and the GOP in DC 'refuse to seat' the Dem congress, there is nothing stopping them from sitting somewhere else and impeaching and removing the president, the entire cabinet and SCOTUS in an afternoon.
I've been seeing a lot of people responding to this with "there ought to be a law," but importantly, we haven't needed a law for this sort of thing because no prior president wanted to be known as a leader who would literally kill people in their hour of need for not voting for him
This is honestly one of the most shocking images coming out of this administration and that’s saying something
Fox's polling is usually some of the most accurate. That Ossoff number is wild. Also, Turek in the lead in Iowa?
NEW POLL 📊 Fox News Senate Polls (June/July) GEORGIA: 🔵 Ossoff 56% (+13) 🔴 Collins 43% NORTH CAROLINA: 🔵 Cooper 53% (+9) 🔴 Whatley 44% OHIO: 🔵 Brown 53% (+8) 🔴 Husted 45% IOWA: 🔵 Turek 50% (+4) 🔴 Hinson 46% (Fox News/Beacon Research/Shaw, A-rated, RV)
These people thought that solving aging would simply be making an AI to do it. In reality to make progress on longevity you need to make college more affordable to train more scientists and doctors, expand skilled immigration and plow money into the NIH and universities. And all of that is woke.
The promise of New York City is inscribed on the Statue of Liberty: this place would welcome anyone seeking refuge or a better life.
Revenge for MeToo (which severely constrained their ability to rape employees), Revenge for Black Lives Matter (which called out how racist many of them were) and most of all Revenge for the 2021 Labor Market where they suddenly had to compete for scarce labor instead of the other way around
My Haitian friend was just fired from his job. "They said I don't have a legal status now." This is likely happening to hundreds of thousands of people across this country today. Sick.
Trump kicked a hornet's nest into a beehive, which toppled over onto a skunk. He's since been alternating between chucking rocks into the melee and loudly proclaiming that he wants to negotiate with it.
it turns out the reddit atheist was an important predator in the ecosystem
Evangelist Whitney Lynn says she preaches on planes because she loves “a captive audience.” She's not alone. It's becoming a trend. If spreading your message requires listeners who can't escape, maybe it's not as compelling as you think. www.friendlyatheist.com/p/christian-...
the fight/don't fight axis remains the most important fault line in democratic politics, and that the moderates have mostly failed to find any way to take the 'fight' side is why they are getting their asses handed to them in primaries right now
This is why DSA candidates are really taking off now instead of eg in 2020 or 2018 www.gelliottmorris.com/p/2026-07-07...
Again their position now is that schools are doing secret illegal affirmative action as evidenced by…the presence of Black people…it’s just racism.
The Supreme Court didn't "end" affirmative action. It declared it illegal in college admissions in 2023. Things do not magically "end" when they are made illegal. Theft has been illegal for millennia, but it happens all the time. So does racial discrimination in admissions.
Rich people say this all the time while they and their kids all go to the most prestigious colleges. Curious.
“You can make more without a college degree because of how much college costs” is the ultimate conservative dumb guy college take, grounded in the idea that there are a ton of trades jobs out there that will make you like $100k a year, and the data for it just isn’t there.
The next time someone tells you that college isn’t worth it, show them this
The US built the greatest talent magnet ever, attracting the smart, skilled, and striving. They’d come to study, then stay and build things here, or leave with positive impressions and fruitful connections. Helped make the US wealthy and powerful. Then America chose to throw it away. And for what?
Congrats we just made it impossible to come here for a PhD www.bostonglobe.com/2026/07/16/m...
Trump v. United States is the most important Supreme Court decision in my lifetime, and it was wrong the minute it was issued. It will be the end of constitutional rule, and it must be overturned and utterly repudiated as soon as possible, even if the tool to do that—Court packing—is bad.
Fuck them, fuck all these people who get rich killing people. And fuck their enablers in the media who are happy to help them because ???
My Uncle died of lung cancer (smoking). I sometimes hear my cousin cough (she smokes too, can't stop even after it killed her dad). It sounds painful and horrible and I'm afraid for her.
Yeah in hindsight making it socially acceptable to get a bunch of young people addicted to nicotine was not a good idea. If you give these companies an inch, they'll take a mile and ruin the lives of millions so they can fleece them.
are young people today aware that there was an active effort 20-25 years ago to stop depicting smoking as cool and glamorous because people got tired of watching their loved ones die of cancer and heart disease from something preventable? seems like classic history repeating itself stuff
I genuinely hate the push to make smoking a thing again. I have watched so many drawn out, ugly, painful deaths from smoking. It makes everything disgusting. It enslaves us to the worst kinds of corporations. There’s ZERO positive here.
anyway i know being told by a dude in his forties that smoking is actually NOT cool isn’t going to persuade anybody of anything but it is a real bummer that young people are selling it to each other again on behalf of some of the most sinister and exploitative companies in the world

its so cool and edgy how my mom is currently dying from lung cancer that spread to her brain and her bones...please for the love of god, don't smoke
