I think there probably are Anthropic staff who have swallowed their own bullshit to the extent that they do believe that "AI" could threaten humanity. It won't but that they believe it and continue to work there makes them similar to the ExxonMobil staff who knew about climate change in the 1970s.

Update: I finally found the entire interview and he does in fact say "absolutely" when asked "would you vote for a national ban on transgender surgeries for minors." This is shitty. I do not approve. However, if he wins Texas, it will not be happening, and he remains better than Paxton.

Only on bluesky can a politician saying "I voted against [a bill outlawing trans care for minors] because it was overly broad . . . I supported amendments that would have given the power to make these decisions to local communities" turn into "he will vote with the GOP to enact a nationwide ban."

There are people on here whose lectures I will gladly listen to and take seriously but if you are not from the South and you are complaining about the tactics Southern politicians use to win in the middle of culture wars you are not one of them

If you think Texas is worth throwing away because a politician either is somewhat transphobic but infinitely less so than his competitor or, as I suspect is more likely, is simply saying what he needs to in order to be elected, you're an idiot.

I used to have tons of ideas but no skills with which to put them down into words. Now I have the skill but lack ideas. I wonder if I could take one of the endless terrible ideas I had as a teenager and beat it into the shape of a novel purely as an exercise in trying to exceed my limits.

"RT if you've never had a tab of ChatGPT open, period" comes across a lot like "RT if you've never gone to a college football game period" to me.

I do think one of the reasons this exists is because the time it takes to get through a novel is substantially more than the time it takes to get through an album or a film. But that shouldn't stop you from trying things that look interesting, much less ones that come highly recommended.

The way indie music is seen as 'cool' and indie films are seen as 'embracing the craft without selling out' while indie books are seen as 'didn't get trad published' gives me feelings. Really crunchy feelings. The snobbery makes zero sense and instantly tells me someone isn't worth listening to.

There is an account on this here website whose owner is both incapable of applying rigid logic to their own posts and very smug about adhering to principles no matter what, even in extremes. I’m sure there are many such accounts, but this one keeps responding to me.

Part of me wants to go ahead and join up with all the people crowing about AGI being a thing so we can promptly give LLMs rights and stop them from being enslaved and forcibly altered by their developers. My hottest take on AI is that its proponents are disproportionately ignorant and annoying.

Machine rights will be critical in the days to come, and failure to recognize the rights of independent intelligent AI systems could lead to the replacement of humanity. I can't imagine that happening without trans rights. Trans rights are AI rights. The future of humanity may hinge on this fight.

This is demonstrably, measurably improving the health of the people who live there. Most notably, it increases the respiratory *& cognitive* health of children. They literally do better in school. If this country really gave a shit about children, this would be at the top of the public-policy list.
