I am exasperated with people accusing programmers of "gatekeeping" programming. We were practically dragging people through the gate. Do you know why a mindless LLM can tell you so much great programming information? It's because we've been sharing that information for free online for decades.

I appreciate @acollierastro.bsky.social’s desire to not make anyone feel dumb, which is noble and the correct stance for an educator. But I am a former academic from basically the wordsiest of disciplines and I composed in LaTeX. Because Word is the literal worst. She is 100% right about this!

so like lemme weigh in on this as someone who is more financially comfortable than many in my generational cohort: everything I have gained seems precarious and temporary because I know the people with real money will take it all from me the second they get an opportunity and no one will protect me.

Here is an insane piece of lore inside SQLite's source code I am researching VACUUM and I was studying their code. In VACUUM, SQLite creates a temp file prefixed with `etilqs_` Here is why:

** 2006-10-31: The default prefix used to be "sqlite_". But then ** Mcafee started using SQLite in their anti-virus product and it ** started putting files with the "sqlite" name in the c:/temp folder. ** This annoyed many windows users. Those users would then do a ** Google search for "sqlite", find the telephone numbers of the ** developers and call to wake them up at night and complain. ** For this reason, the default name prefix is changed to be "sqlite" ** spelled backwards. I am basically a homebody and I was childless in 2020/21, so covid social isolation truly was easy mode for me. But it did suck for a lot of people and I don't quite know how to put this but I think we should cultivate more gratitude for people doing shitty hard things for the collective good.

my edgy Covid take is that I while I did socially isolate until vaccines came online for the good of society, I absolutely loathed being unable to see people in person, throw a party, or travel for over a year, and I enjoyed absolutely nothing whatsoever about any of it

At this point, if someone ran for president on the single campaign promise that they'd hang Trump and Hegseth for war crimes, they'd have my vote. Hell, I'd knock on doors for them. That is not even an extreme leftist thing, "killing fascists" is like, a 1940s-era conservative position.
