One thing that has changed since I was a kid is that old people used to have much better manners than young people. Now if the guy behind you on the airplane is playing phone games with the sound on, odds are good he’s in his sixties.
The Luddites' actual argument was that automated looms meant expensive, skilled workers were being replaced with literal children, who were then getting maimed and killed, and maybe this is bad.

I wrote way back in 2019 (RIP The Outline you were good) about just how financially dependent many universities are on international students to subsidize other students. PhD programs are not the point, necessarily. Without intl students and the high tuition they pay, schools are going to fold.
