"The primary aim of modern warfare… is to use up the products of the machine without raising the general standard of living... War is a way of shattering to pieces... materials which might otherwise be used to make the masses too comfortable, and hence, in the long run, too intelligent." - 1984
Trump is endorsing a forever war in the Middle East. He is setting billions of your taxpayer dollars on fire over a war America doesn't support, and Americans are literally also paying the price at the pump. And Republicans are voting to let this war go on forever.

Experienced a series of wicked bad flight delays today, but I am racking up SO many reading minutes for my adult summer reading log at the library.
This thread is remarkably similar to my experience, feelings, and the precautions I have taken. Worth reading for some good insight for what even reasonably privileged trans folks are going through.
It's not appropriate for cis people to say that trans people are too alarmed, or that certain trans writers are irresponsibly causing trans people to think the sky is falling. I want to take some time in this 🧵 to write personally about how my skies have fallen.
Whoa! Take notes, Massachusetts.
This is cool (the first one especially)
Just had to call a customer service line for help logging in somewhere and it turned out the only issue was I had forgotten my username. I officially feel ancient.
I'm currently reading @kkdumez.bsky.social's 'Jesus and John Wayne' so this paragraph from the latest issue of @garbageday.email hit especially hard:
you know the kid lit publishing controversy that actually exists and I'd like you all to get on? The lack of marketing & publicity support for books by marginalized authors that don't sell and then are used as proof to not acquire more books from those authors.
"Chieng scoffed at using AI for reading and answering emails. 'You know who else can do that? Me,' he said... 'If you can’t do that, how useless are you?'” Lots more bangers where that came from: news.harvard.edu/gazette/stor...

I read something recently about Gen Z understanding fewer cultural references from before their lifetime than previous generations, and attributing it to the glut of media now compared to the slimmer options of cable TV and home video.
If only everyone approached social media in this way.
Bluesky isn't a bubble or an echo chamber, it's a garden. You plant some seeds and pull some weeds, you tend to it with care, and you make it into a space that pleases you when you come to sit in it a while. Other people can plant and tend to their own gardens, if they like. This garden is yours.

It's wild to me that Colbert consistently brought this level of depth and complexity to his interviews on a late night comedy show. It's the kind of media I wish we had more of in the mainstream and, as of last night, we have even less. An enormous and shameful loss.
One of my all-time favorite moments from Colbert’s show — this exchange with Dua Lipa on faith and grief.
lololol that's my hometown lake. Glad to see she's doing her part to rid the world of these chudmobiles.
and now, your moment of zen. 🎥 (https://www.instagram.com/reel/DYhEwUvv67q/)
This gave me such a needed jolt of hope. Not just for trans people, but for basic critical thinking skills and having a friggin' spine.
CIS PEOPLE TIME TO STEP UP it’s once again time to yell at our bad government via online comment form the FCC is trying to make trans and nonbinary content require special ratings on shows GLAAD has a good writeup on it below TELL ‘EM NO direct link to comment form: www.fcc.gov/ecfs/filings...

The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) is targeting LGBTQ stories. They are trying to control what you see on television. This government overreach is dangerous...

Genuinely didn't think having Do Not Disturb on 24/7 was a radical decision. I have filters for family, and other important folks on occasion, to get through, but have otherwise had some version of DnD on for close to a decade.
My Blissful, Unbothered Life as a ‘Do Not Disturb’ Maximalist
I turned off my phone notifications for an entire week. It made me a less disturbed person, but the people closest to me got annoyed.

"all writers are using AI and lying about it" is up there with "all writers are millionaires"
Honestly proud of my filter bubble that it has taken me multiple days to figure out why everyone was talking about HP again. All I saw were people dunking on JKR & making great points, with receipts, about her transphobia. Only now have I learned a trailer dropped for the new show. Love that for me.
I was just lying in the backyard, staring up at the clouds when a plane passed into view with a fucking Amazon ad painted on the bottom of it. Literally trying to touch grass and still being advertised to.
MAKE AN EMERGENCY DONATION to Trans Continental Pipeline right now. They are a Colorado based org that helps trans people relocate there and they are overwhelmed with requests. CO borders KS, and TCP has the infrastructure to help get people out. GO DONATE. tcpipeline.org

i really can not emphasize enough that the most materially impactful thing you can do for trans people right now is hire them.
They won't start with banning birth control. First they'll lie about it. Then dictate who can prescribe it, use it, fund it, in what forms, and for how long. Suddenly, your doctor won't call you back. I know this is what they'll do because it's what they're doing to transgender healthcare right now.
Update: Internet won’t be restored until at least 10:30. Gonna have to cancel the stream tonight. Sorry buds ☹️
Stream friends! My neighborhood is experiencing an internet outage and we have very little cell service. I’m trying to get online for tonight’s stream, but it may not happen until 7:30 PM EST. I’ll go live as soon as I can!
