5 Aug 1814 // 12-gun brig sloop HMS Magnet, under Acting Lieutenant George Hawksworth, sailed from Fort York, Ontario, on 4 August with a small convoy. She was carrying soldiers and gunpowder across Lake Ontario to Niagara. Overnight she lost touch with the other vessels in the convoy. [1/4]

2 Aug 1940 // HM Trawler Cape Finisterre was on patrol off Harwich, where she was based, when she was attacked by a number of German aircraft, identified as Me 110s. Several near-misses from bombs blew men overboard and shook the trawler severely, the damage causing her to flood and sink. [1/2]

I was today years old when I found out that actor Michael Dorn is an accomplished pilot who owned an F-86 Sabre in the 1990s. He once ran out of fuel and made an emergency landing at a military airfield. The base commander agreed not to tell the FAA in return for autographs and two low level passes…
On this day in 1943, 177 US B-24 bombers take off from their bases in Libya to attack oil refineries in Ploești, Romania. 53 bombers and 530 crewmen are lost in the attack which slows, but does not stop, oil production in the refineries. Only 88 of the planes return to Libya.
1 Aug 1940 // Submarine HMS Oswald was on the surface off Cape Spartivento at just before midnight, charging her batteries, when she was sunk by Italian destroyer Ugolino Vivaldi. Italian forces had been alerted to the submarine's presence by an unsuccessful attack she had made on a convoy. [1/4]

On this day in 1948, USS Nevada is sunk as a target ship off Hawaii, having survived both atomic bomb explosions at Bikini in 1946. Gunfire from surface ships failing to sink her, the coup de grace is delivered by an arial torpedo. #NavalHistory
