I have a new story in this; 'Passengers', about two high school students on a class trip, travelling through 90s Bengal in a night train that leads them, through unforeseen circumstances, to the event horizon of death's country. Looking forward to reading my distinguished co-contributors' stories:

The Book of the Dead

We are all going to die. But how? Will it hurt? Where will we go? What will we find there? What will happen to the people we leave behind? Jonathan Strahan,...

Obviously playing guitar in riff based music is thrilling. But I enjoy playing the bass in this music even more, I can lock into that mega riff, improvise around its edges, stick close to the drums, help keep the wall of sound solid during solos...glue things together without having to stick out.

I had to code and pronounce a time of death on a respiratory therapist colleague. There's a memorial plaque for her outside the emergency department to this day. I wrote and re-wrote my will. I will never forgive these ghouls trying to rewrite history and deny our experience.

In 1986, contracting HIV meant you were going to die, usually slowly, painfully, and alone. Now it's a chronic illness like hypertension. In 1986, gay and lesbian couples couldn't have their relationships legally recognized and had to adopt elaborate legal workarounds.

Food, man. Food is so much better than it was in 1986. All of it. Poor-people food, restaurant food, fresh food, frozen food. Food is just a hell of a lot better.

air travel is one of those experiences that has gotten monotonically worse over my entire lifetime

question though: has *anything* in the last 40+ years genuinely gotten *better*?

like, there's *more* stuff, sure, but is any of it *better*?

I'd really like if progressive candidates who otherwise talk a really good talk would stop leaning into casual antisemitism, that'd be very cool I'd also like if people paid to talk about progressive candidates would stop saying "antisemitic" when they mean "Muslim" or "not pro-genocide"

On this day in 1944, the Gestapo found Anne Frank and her family in their Secret Annex. Her diary stands as a warning against hatred and persecution. Eighty years later, we should recognize the warning signs before it’s too late.🙂‍↕️

Someone, is getting dunked on this website. And I'm reminded how out of proportion these things are due to network effect / going viral. They need two people going "oh fuck off mate, you're talking crap" and they get 600 as everyone sticks a boot in a drive-by kicking.
