Man, streetcars work so well as transit when there aren’t other cars to get in the way.

The turnstiles in the NYC subway are getting more and more ridiculous, to prevent fare evasion. Meanwhile, I just got on the metro in Oslo and it has no turnstiles at all.

I am yet again getting on my soapbox to tell y’all about how my previous job (public library) received a grant once to keep branches in some neighborhoods open until midnight on Fri and Sat. The neighborhoods were picked specifically because of higher crime rates and lack of support services (1/ )

Huh, when looking at my music thread I've noticed some videos have previews and others don't. It seems like the difference is whether I copy the link manually, and thus it goes to youtube.com (and shows the preview), or if I use the Share link, which goes to youtu.be (and doesn't)

What’s the most widely enjoyed food that you can’t stand, not because of allergies or anything but just because you hate it?

My favorite “you’re a New Yorker now” metric is if you’ve been here long enough to lament the great restaurant/shop that used to be in that spot. (Which given turnover doesn’t take very long.)

I saw a few posts about June being Black Music Month and, it also being Pride, it made me wonder if I had at least 30 Black and queer artists in my music library such that I could post one song I liked by a different artist each day. Looks like I have ~25, so I might need to discover 5 more.

Our entire economy is being artificially propped up by astrology for men: AI, crypto, sports betting, and prediction markets. It's an economy shaped entirely by male insecurity and lack of impulse control, and we'll all pay the price.

Since game theory always has Row and Column players, it is convenient, variable-name-wise, that the game of Chicken from Footloose is played between Ren and Chuck.

While of course I always want students to improve, when they do exactly as well as their average on an assessment, it at least makes me feel like I was grading their work correctly, or at least consistently.

Kudos to @19thnews.org for being an outlier in the opposite direction - we found this justice-focused indie news site to have quoted a trans person in 70 percent of their news stories about the trans community.

My proposal: replace all the on street parking with trees. Okay, in my magnanimity, half. Space for one car between each pair of trees. (But only a reasonably sized car.)

I wonder if the recent resurgence in cigarette smoking is partially due to all other prices rising, so the formerly high prices of cigs (from taxes) doesn’t sound as wild.

To my non tech normies, PSA: when you share a link, everything after the ? is tracking. Those “query parameters” tell companies exactly how you arrived, what app you clicked, which ad or email sent you, sometimes a unique identifier tied to you. You can delete everything after the question mark.

I remember when the PS2 Spider-Man game came out there was something uncanny and wrong about the city in it, and it was because it had no scaffolding. But maybe soon it will be more right than not.
