I've told this story before and I suppose now it's time to do it again. When I was in 9th grade, my English teacher was the elderly sort of man who always wore a gray flannel suit and had a cigarette before class and a cigarette at the end of class every period.

It seems like assigned reading, especially summer reading, should include titles from different genres, with different tones, from different eras. (And as a former sulky Anne Rice-reading teen, I advocate for some over-the-top moodiness in the mix with realistic problem fiction and happier tales.)

TODAY! From 1 to 5 pm, I'll be signing books at Loganberry Books in Cleveland. THE DISSIDENTS isn't out yet, but I have free bookplates to pass out. I'll be drawing in copies of my other books. It's day 2 of Loganberry's annual Authors Alley Festival. Lots of authors, lectures, book things etc.

Phew done! 👹 On one hand it was a satisfying end because all the forms came back together. On the other hand, the vengeful part of me wishes V et al had destroyed themselves rather than let the god of the gullet stay entangled and go with them.

Over a month ago, Harper's Bazaar UK published what appears to be a heavily AI story, and at BEST a story that objectively, directly plagiarizes from a bunch of AI slop. There's been no statement, no investigation, no response to multiple requests for information, and the story remains live.

🧵 Ignore the part of this that is a shitty advertisement for Pangram. AI checkers are fallible; there's a ton of astroturfing for Pangram specifically right now. The actual piece here definitely deserves investigation and I'm a little baffled that it didn't raise red flags purely by human eyes.
