It's Banned Books Week. My fellow librarians, listen carefully: your book displays should be almost exclusively writers who are alive. Yes, I know classic literature is also being banned, but most of those authors are dead. They aren't suffering financially from bans and challenges.

I love that everyone’s excited about #bannedbooksweek, but please remember that there’s so much more to it than just buying or reading a banned book. Its also about people- librarians, educators, and readers- Kelly’s body of work is a starting point to understand this more.

A massive thread of resources, history, information, and material to help you not only fight and understand book censorship but protect the incredible democratic institutions of public libraries and public education. This is updated regularly!

Image of the tops of books in a herringbone pattern. They are in a rainbow gradient. The center of the image has a green textbox with the words "Resources for fighting book censorship, library challenges, and more."

Here's the thing: most books that are banned don't make the lists that get circulated each #BannedBooksWeek. If you're a book creator and your book gets banned, please respond to this post with your book and its buy link on bookshop.org. That way we can support indies and banned books 💛

The state not knowing what’s happening with book bans is a feature, not a bug. Districts don’t keep complete records (e.g., they don’t follow their process (see Washington) or have deleted records (see Davis)), and USBE never verifies that districts actually follow policy before removing books.

After a federal judge refused to dismiss the lawsuit over Utah's school book bans, the Utah Attorney General's Office gave its formal response to the litigation filed against the state by students/book authors. Let's just say it's 31 pages of "to the point." 😅 #utpol #Utah

Today in retirement: Had a blast participating in the nobookbans.org Show Up, Speak Up telethon! If you missed my contribution, here it is. Props to my rhythm section (my husband Doug) and to Tony Danza, who first inspired me to pick up the uke!

This is state-mandated book banning being perpetuated here. It is the Dan Patrick level "we're going to downgrade your school" banning from Texas, but in Florida. Thousands of books will be removed, and you'll probably never know about it.

Texas Senate Bill 13 allows anyone (including Dan Patrick and Bonnie Wallace) to formally challenge books in the school district in which they live. Every district should respond to every request or demand to remove any library book, by following their EFB Local library materials policy.
