this is why I find climate dooming so frustrating there is no point - none - at which throwing up your hands and going “well we’re fucked” is the correct response every tenth of a degree matters and can make a big difference and is worth fighting for

Well said. It's also worth pointing out that even if we do miss the 2c target, hitting 2.1 is still better than 2.3. Climate tipping points are not all or nothing, there are multiple tipping points at different temperatures.

We are going to win! This stuff can and will be brought to a halt. None of it is inevitable. Anthropic cannot afford to slow down. It has to grow to at least $100bn a year in revenue or it doesn’t have a hope in hell of paying its compute bills. Same for clammy little Altman.

Uber’s COO has said that it’s getting “harder to justify” its AI costs because there was no way to show a link between AI spend and any meaningful increase in useful features. This is the first time I’ve seen a company say this directly. www.businessinsider.com/uber-coo-and...

"That link is not there yet, right?" he said. think maybe implicitly there is more that is getting shipped, but it's very hard to draw a line between one of those stats and, 'Okay, now we're actually producing 25% more useful consumer features."
He said that the trade-off costs from Al are harder to justify because he can't draw a direct link. Earlier this month, CEO Dara Khosrowshahi said in an earnings call that Uber was slowing hiring to counter its investments in AI.

“That’s all anybody can do right now. Live. Hold out. Survive. I don’t know whether good times are coming back again. But I know that won’t matter if we don’t survive these times.” ― Octavia E. Butler, Parable of the Sower

I hope white people have plans on what they'll do when the Democrats retake power and do NOTHING about Trump, his administration, or all the people working for ICE

What I can say with a full throat, however, is that “AI” is a rhetorical, political tool and a set of ideologies built on specious claims. The technologies are almost incidental to those things, and are built to try to fulfill those claims, not the other way around.

I’m watching the new essential film, Ghosts in the Machine, featuring many esteemed colleagues of mine, and noting how many of the great men scientists making claims about the ability for machines to mimic humanity also denied the humanity of women in myriad ways.

The Epstein files document what many women researchers have long experienced but rarely seen laid bare so starkly: exclusion operating behind closed doors, shaping who gets funded, invited, mentored, and taken seriously. How many of these networks, norms, and gatekeepers remain in place?

Denton County and its economy are built around the University of North Texas. Denton County also went 56/43 for Trump in 2024. That's because most voters there wanted to get rid of immigrants. Now, as international students disappear, the university is collapsing. They burned down their own house.

The university is facing a projected $45 million shortfall as international student enrollment falls.
