The idea that the fundamental determinant of France and the UK's differing fates in 1940 was "resolve" rather than 21 miles of deep water would be risible if it wasn't so widely believed and so significant a contributing factor to many of the worst aspects of our culture and politics.

French forces held a fierce defensive perimeter around Dunkirk and lost 18,000 souls. 40,000 became POWs. Without their resolve we wouldn’t have our nation’s story. It’s estimated 20-60k French resistance fighters died during the war. You’re only diminishing yourself with comments like this.

Crop yields down, our countryside scorched and over 2800 people are dead due to this summer's heatwaves. Meanwhile fossil fuel giants are raking in record profits. We must end this rampant profiteering, and cut fossil fuels from our energy mix as soon as possible.

Deputy Political editor of the guardian, who has written zero articles on the (lack of) political response to the Climate Crisis this summer despite the unprecedented heatwaves, wonders why politicians are not talking about it.

We are in the third drought in five years. We have the National Trust and NFU - those radical types - sounding the alarm on unprecedented temperatures. But so little from any single figure in politics talking about the climate crisis.

Brilliant letter from Stuart Thompson to Jeremy Clarkson about his comments that benefit claimants should write weekly thank you letters to tax payers detailing how they spend their benefits each week.

Govt planning c. 100 new data centres by early 2030s, mostly in already water stressed areas. They have no legal obligation to disclose how much water they use. Meanwhile Govt launches £75m publicity campaign to urge us to reduce water use & privatised water companies waste 19% thro leaks. Madness

So far this summer we've smashed the following UK records: May max temperature (by 2.3°C) May highest minimum daily temp (by 2.4°C) June max temp (by 2.4°C) June highest minimum daily temp (by 0.5°C) No. of days max temp over 35°C: 6 (+1) No. of days max temp over 34°C: 9 (+2)

Friendly reminder that these things aren't impacted by closing the Strait of Hormuz so maybe, just maybe, we should implement them to avoid being impacted by future conflicts: -Solar panels -Wind turbines -Battery storage -Electric vehicles -Bicycles -Natural fertilizers -Electric heat pumps

You see everything is connected. The marine heatwaves off the coasts of Europe make heatwaves on land more intense, which in turn dries out vegetation, which then creates perfect fire weather conditions. Brought to you by the world's refusal to drastically reduce the burning of fossil fuels.

I did an experiment in which I asked Copilot to generate a review of a grant proposal. I gave it the review criteria and it spat out a surprisingly specific and thorough review… before I’d given it a proposal. It’s just predictive text. It is not thinking. it generates text, it does not write.

That's £10,000 MILLION! A lot of Tory pals & donors were set up for life. They got houses, fancy cars, yachts... from a scam which almost certainly led to the deaths of thousands of doctors and nurses, during a pandemic. Has a Govt ever sunk as low as this? And no-one has been held to account.

Five years on... We need to remember again just how bad and corrupt the Tories were, and still are. Can you also imagine what would have happened if the blatant crook Farage and his #UKIP / #ReformUK had been in government? We would all have died. #Covid #Johnson #bbclaurak #Clacton #ukpolitics
