This is genuinely astonishing: a piece by the Globe and Mail’s editorial board lamenting the “new normal” of wildfires and summer smoke and no mention whatsoever of a) climate change, or b) the burning of fossil fuels that causes it. #cdnpoli www.theglobeandmail.com/opinion/edit...
Globe editorial: A summer season of fire, smoke, ashes and fear
The carefree feeling of summers past has been incinerated as wildfires rage across the country

Did you see how Apple, Amazon Walmart and other big companies are refunding the billions of dollars they got back from the federal tariff settlement to their customers, who ultimately bore the cost of higher prices? Yea, me neither.
A simple way to think about basic income. Wealth transfer is also a transfer of power.

“Ben-Gvir, who presides over Israel’s prisons as national security minister, has said that the idea was inspired by U.S. President Donald Trump’s ‘Alligator Alcatraz,’ the immigration jail in Florida that was shuttered after reports of horrific human rights abuses.”
An Israeli court has temporarily blocked a plan, cooked up by far right minister Itamar Ben-Gvir, to construct a moat full of crocodiles around a notoriously abusive prison that holds Palestinians, over concerns that the crocodiles would be harmed or mistreated.

This isn't the new normal. It's just the beginning
This summer’s disasters appear to have boosted climate multilateralism, at least within Europe, and underscored the need to tackle fossil fuels. But we may not be waiting long for the scientists' “wor...

this editorial manages to avoid the phrase "climate change" entirely
"Estimates by experts have found that these cuts are leading to the early deaths of thousands of people a day; some have estimated that they've killed over 700,000 people ... [B]y 2030, the DOGE cuts could cause over 14 million preventable deaths, including 4.5 million children and babies under 5."
Elon Musk has shared that he got “carried away” during his time heading DOGE — with the billionaire seeming to express only mild regret for the sweeping, illegal government cuts that are slated to kill millions of people across the world over the coming years.
"Liberal bubble" has only ever meant anywhere where right wing perspectives aren't artificially elevated and forced into everyone's feeds.
Nice AI-image-generating tool, but it will never be as great an artist as Onfim, a child who lived in the Novgorod Republic in the mid-1200s and who scribbled these drawings and schoolwork writings on birch bark at the age of 6 or 7.
Guy I knew at work said he had a date and while they were eating chicken, his date told him chickens are descended from dinosaurs and then he couldn’t finish the chicken. He asked me if this was true. Yeah, bro, they’re dinosaurs. I’m sorry it ruined your date I guess.

See 2026 on right? It’s the hottest the El Niño subsurface has ever been measured. If we are being honest, we have to do serious research into how excess heat due to climate change (90% stored in Ocean) likely fuels stronger El Nino’s. To no one’s surprise, stored heat is coming back to haunt us!
Another El Niño Record! Watch as heat back ups at the end. The heat building below the surface, which fuels El Niño, is higher than ever measured. This shows the heat just below the Trop Pacific sfc, moving from the W.Pacific Warm Pool where it’s stored, to the E. Pacific Sfc where El Niño forms 1/

Please stop saying “lockdowns.” There were never true lockdowns in the US, and it fuels far right narratives to repeat this inaccurate statement. You can say closures, you can say restrictions, or better, you can say public health measures which saved many lives.
People still complain about “lockdowns” but we had none in the US. We had stay-at-home orders, where although businesses were closed, you could still go outside whenever you wanted. Other countries had far stricter rules, and yet have been much more accepting of them as they saved many more lives.

"Using AI compliments, intensifies, and accelerates privatization of the public sector, and that's in addition to any harm that it's doing to work ... The labor movement should be contesting the idea that the imposition of AI is inevitable."
Organized labor’s response to AI has been fraught. Where some see an inevitable shift that simply needs to be regulated and could potentially even create jobs, others see a dangerous trend that will result in further job losses along with a variety of other problems.
