Like the hypocrisy and the open corruption, the naked, brazen lying is itself aspiring authoritarianism. They aren't lying to cover anything up. They're saying, "We know we're lying. You know we're lying. And we know you know we're lying. And there's nothing you can do about it."

It's very clear that Kratsios/Trump wants to destroy universities (and the indirect costs they receive), or, what he calls "legacy institutions". It seems that there is very little understanding of how current science works, particularly the massive infrastructure it needs. Who's gonna pay for that?

First, the U.S. research system should prioritize the individual scientist over legacy institutions. If we are serious about expanding what our scientists can do, we must invest directly in American researchers and the bold ideas that drive them. Too much of our research enterprise has come to serve itself rather than the scientists within it. Federal funding agencies should support a broader range of performers, including a new generation of mission-driven research organizations, to expand our scientific horizons. And these agencies should organize themselves around the interdisciplinary frontiers of science today, rather than the academic silos of the last century.

Thus media remains reluctant to impose any kind of narrative. We hear plenty about what he does (“abruptly announces fee on Hormuz”) but very rarely what it means (“he’s a madman who regularly demonstrates alarming personal qualities, and a constant threat to domestic and international stability”).

This point needs to be made over and again: The main purpose of wealth taxes should not be to raise revenue. That's a small and secondary benefit. The main purpose should be to *reduce the fortunes of the ultrarich*. Why? Because those fortunes present a massive threat to democracy and public life.

People said Occupy was a failure and it ushered in 15 years of actual political engagement on economic inequality People like to call BLM, Abolish ICE, etc failures and, no. Spontaneous mass protest moments rarely win immediately. But they change the political environment and lay the groundwork.
