Like the hypocrisy and the open corruption, the naked, brazen lying is itself aspiring authoritarianism. They aren't lying to cover anything up. They're saying, "We know we're lying. You know we're lying. And we know you know we're lying. And there's nothing you can do about it."

BASH: But it peeled off. Why did that happen? BURGUM: It didn't peel off. There was vandalism. There was box cutters. There have been 7 arrests. BASH: There are photographs of people cutting a 350 foot gash in the reflecting pool? BURGUM: Dana, I'm not sure why you keep questioning it

If you cannot support a legally correct argument challenging a massive government overreach that criminalizes a wide range of protected speech, just because it's made by The Worst Guy You Know and the law purports to cover an unpopular thing, you don't have principles, you have teams.

Astronomer Vera Rubin was born #OTD in 1928. Her work on galactic rotation curves became one of the main pieces of evidence for the existence of dark matter and she deserved a Nobel Prize for it. 🧪 🔭 ⚛️ 👩‍🔬 Image: Vassar College / Emilio Segrè Visual Archives

Black and white photo of a young Vera Rubin – likely in her teens or twenties – looking through the eyepiece of a long telescope. She wears a blouse or dress with short sleeves and a grid print. Her wavy hair is shoulder length, and there is a wall behind her composed of two-by-fours and wood boards. Her right hand touches the eyepiece, and her left hand is turning a small adjustment knob on the side of the telescope.

Circumstances have forced me to take a part-time job as a small airport. Unpredictable hours and terrible pay. On the plus side, I get to meet a diverse and fascinating range of commuters.

A blackcap on my hand, in autumn 2018, looking like an absolute unit.A baby blackbird on my hand, looking out the window at my former postman Andrew, who she has a weird crush on.A Pale Tussock moth on one of my fingers, looking kind of self-satisfied about how brilliantly furry it is.A Red Admiral butterfly getting a lift to the other side of the garden on my hand because it is tired

I'm starting to wonder whether climate narratives are inadvertently holding back the energy transition Business leaders, councillors etc still see this as something they have to do 'for the climate' - it's a burden, a cost, and it's altruistic, so they resist They don't hear the other story...

Thus media remains reluctant to impose any kind of narrative. We hear plenty about what he does (“abruptly announces fee on Hormuz”) but very rarely what it means (“he’s a madman who regularly demonstrates alarming personal qualities, and a constant threat to domestic and international stability”).

This point needs to be made over and again: The main purpose of wealth taxes should not be to raise revenue. That's a small and secondary benefit. The main purpose should be to *reduce the fortunes of the ultrarich*. Why? Because those fortunes present a massive threat to democracy and public life.

I want all the cis men who are wondering why a woman didn't come forward UNTIL NOW and are musing that women certainly aren't powerless and blah blah blah First, shut the fuck up. Second, I want you to, while shutting the fuck up, think about the time you didn't say anything. You know, at work.

If you want to interview someone like Rufo - why would you but if you insisted - you've gotta treat it like Johnny Carson bringing Uri Gellar on where you meticulously research all his little tricks and then get him in a room and deny him access to them while cameras roll. Takes a lot of work!

I was just about to say that I think he was trying to do a Chotiner, but he was too lazy and unskilled and didn't have the ability to edit for length and clarity like Chotiner does.
