Today I visited the memorial to the "Comfort Women" at St. Mary's Square in Chinatown in San Francisco. The memorial consists of two sets of statues, one featuring three young women/girls dressed in the 1930s-style clothing of China, Korea, and the Philippines, representing the hundreds of thousands of young women and girls who were kidnapped by the Japanese army during World War II, enslaved by the military, and forced to perform sex work for the soldiers in what were euphemestically called "comfort stations."

The diarrhea lettuce company, Taylor Farms, uses slave labor contracted from the Arizona Dept. of Corrections. The backbreaking labor is often performed by imprisoned Mexican nationals who would be otherwise ineligble to work in the US. They are paid $1.50 an hour.

This reinforces my beef with the certain strain of scicomm-er who (a) lay responsibility solely at the feet of work-a-day scientists and (b) disregard the centrality of social processes not only in disseminating science, but in determining whose sciences are even legitimate (in the given era)

A few minutes ago, two ICE flights operated by Journey Aviation landed in Eswatini, likely another third-country removal of immigrants to a maximum security prison there. Nineteen people have already been sent there on previous ICE flights in the last nine months. Only two have been released.
