Anyone near St Luke's Church, at Haslar Hospital, Gosport, Hampshire? Wall tablet there to an RN officer I'm interested in. The text is on the Maritime Monuments Database, which is great, but without a photo of the tablet. Have emailed the Haslar society, but just in case... #MaritimeHistory

NEW: Big new feature from me about offshore wind farms as anchors for wildlife! For example: seals swimming *into* turbine towers to, apparently, hunt fish - and scour protection at the base of turbines used by sea creatures as a dwelling place. atmos.earth/science-and-...

Offshore wind farms can pose risks to birds and marine life. But their foundations also serve as artificial reefs, offering essential habit.

Andy Burnham says he wants to end rough sleeping, how difficult will that be & what approach should he take? It’s a subject I’ve been writing about for years in Liverpool & the city provides a good test case for the scale of the problem and what’s needed A long but hopefully useful thread 🧵

If you stood on Briggate at 8am on a weekday in 1957, and stood there again in 2026, in which year could you reach more of the city in half an hour? Samuel Bancroft has crunched the numbers. Since the 1950s, Leeds has got bigger - but the city has effectively shrunk.

Factors that affect reading include poverty and the stress it causes, insecure housing, homework, assessment; cuts to public library services, school library cuts and "pressures on parents and declining reading among adults leading to less role modelling and less shared reading at home."

ELIZABETH: Should we… expose Wickham? JANE: I don’t know about it. What do you think? ELIZABETH: Well, I guess we shouldn’t be the ones to do it since it’s Darcy’s account and not our story to tell. AND we have this precise discussion about abusers to this very day!!!! JANE!!! AUSTEN!!!!

The airspeed velocity of an unladen swallow is not the only factor which makes it hard to photograph. Add dark, shiny heads and a shallow profile, and catching them sideways on (when you can't see wings or tail) involves more luck than judgement. But it's fun to try, however flawed the result.

A swallow flying from right to left with wings and tail streaming beside and behind it. Its head is dark blue and red, and its breast is white.
