TBH, all the focus on the armed dad who stopped the shooter is also unsettling. Yes, heroic. However: The killer was 16 YEARS OLD. Three child victims and a teacher are dead, others wounded, another community shattered. Why isn't the focus, 'How do we stop this from happening in the first place?'

Mark Follman@markfollman.bsky.social · 3d ago

Absolutely, the armed dad who stopped the school shooter in Bend acted heroically. So did the police who responded quickly. But this also needs to be said: "good guys with guns" and "active shooter drills" are reactive. We need much more active shooter PREVENTION www.motherjones.com/criminal-jus...

Well, look at that. California is seeing a big increase in multifamily housing permits. We passed historic CEQA reforms w/AB 130 to make it easier to build housing & now we’re seeing momentum. There’s still lots of work to do, but this is an encouraging sign. www.ocregister.com/2026/10/08/c...

California multifamily permits jump 33% this year

Permits for 36,600 multifamily housing units statewide equals the third-best start to a year since 1990.

This country seriously would rather children be murdered en masse at school than be trans. A single trans athlete competes in sports and hundreds of laws are introduced. Children are murdered on a daily basis and it's a fact of life. THINK ABOUT THAT FFS.

So I know this is an unpopular opinion, but maybe a bunch of child rapists who were proudly white supremacist and couldn't tell the difference between human beings and farming equipment weren't actually infallible demigods and the Second Amendment might be one of many mistakes in that document.

My heart is completely broken for the children, families, teachers, and entire Silver Rail Elementary community in Bend, Oregon today. Elementary school should be about jungle gyms, math class, and making new friends—not learning where to hide from a shooter.

Only in America are mass shootings in schools a regular occurrence. Kids endure active shooter drills. They never get to enjoy a sense of safety. Yet America refuses to deal with the guns. They value the second amendment over the lives of their own children:

Police say at least 2 were hospitalized after shooting at elementary school, and the shooter is dead

Authorities say at least two people were hospitalized Thursday following a shooting at an elementary school in Bend, Oregon, and the shooter was shot and killed.

strategic political capture of the court has, for 40 years, been a one-way ratchet. among other things, this has inculcated a sense among conservatives that they can act with virtual impunity. showing them that their opponents will play hardball is a necessary first step toward a better status quo.

not to be a one-trick pony but Biden was, in fact, trying very hard to fix this shit by building up US chip fab capabilities and we decided to reward him for that by reëlecting Trump who immediately took the axe to American chip manufacturing mid-buildout

We're in totally unprecedented territory when it comes to computer prices; they're up a record 10% over the last year alone in data released this morning (and that's after adjusting for quality improvements, which usually are enough to drive steady *de*-flation)

I’m outraged by this attack on Representative Omar. Trump and his DOJ have a bizarre obsession with tearing down Minnesota, our leaders and our communities. This latest action, even as voting has already started in Minnesota, is a transparent attempt to interfere in our elections.

Yes. Homelessness is a choice that we make, as a society, every day. If it gets treated as part of the architecture of civilization, that’s only because powerful forces want you to think that way. Finally, it would cost less to house every unhoused person than it costs us to leave them homeless.

It's World Homeless Day, and I'll just say: Homelessness isn't some great unsolvable mystery. People are homeless because they don't have homes. This suffering persists not for lack of solutions, but because enormous wealth and power are invested in maintaining the very structures that produce it.

If Lauren Boebert's district here in Colorado can vote for a reproductive health amendment that permits abortion without it being tied to fetal viability, then any red district can—and you will never change my mind. We don't have to settle for crumbs. I wrote about it here.

Missouri’s Abortion Rights Amendment Fell Into the Fetal Viability Trap. Let’s Talk About It.

The viability standard failed us under Roe v. Wade. It doesn’t have to be the future of reproductive freedom—just ask Colorado.

Would have been nice, I think, if Jan Greenberg had responded, as virtually any of us would have, that "For your information, virtually every woman I know made crucial life decisions--in the workplace, the bedroom, the doctor's office, deciding where to live, etc.--in reliance on Roe. ... [4]

"Countless women will now make different decisions about careers, education, relationships, and whether to try to become pregnant than they would have when Roe served as a backstop....For millions of women, Roe and Casey have been critical in giving them control of their bodies and their lives." [3]

Just to be clear, this isn't much different from what he wrote in Dobbs. To which Justices Breyer, Sotomayor and Kagan aptly responded: "This is to ignore as judges what we know as men and women. The interests women have in Roe and Casey are perfectly, viscerally concrete." [2]

Samuel Alito: We won't overturn Obergefell because it's engendered reliance interests. Jan Crawford: Well, many people had organized their lives around Roe v. Wade. Alito: No, they didn't. Women merely had an "abstract" interest in "ideas about the kind of society that they were going to live in."

The Alito Court: A rare interview with the influential Supreme Court justice

Justice Samuel Alito discussed his opinion in the Dobbs decision overturning Roe v. Wade, the leaked draft and its aftermath, same-sex marriage rights and why he's not retiring yet.

it's such a perfect example of what is actually alito's hallmark as a justice, shoddy, sub-undergraduate thinking dressed up with five dollar words.

the other thing is that this is a totally incoherent and arbitrary standard for deciding who has rights and who doesn't. you could say the same, for instance, of alito's vision of inviolate "religious liberty" or expansive gun rights.

Anyway, happy First Monday everybody, this Supreme Court term is going to be an absolute nightmare, just like they will continue to be until we decide enough is enough and get serious about court reform.
