🚨 BREAKING: Two dozen Jewish New Yorkers were just arrested at Palantir’s West 18th Street office during Passover for protesting the company’s collaboration with ICE. We will not celebrate the Jewish holiday of liberation quietly while Palantir profits from ICE kidnapping our neighbors.

For @msnownews.bsky.social, I wrote an article about how ICE Watch is grounded in sociological theories of violence prevention. The reality is that most men will only commit public violence in extremely specific scenarios and ICE Watch disrupts the conditions necessary for escalation.

Wasow’s study supports the use of nonviolent direct action during the civil rights movement, a protest technique that King favored for both moral and STRATEGIC reasons. Excerpt from a paper by me (currently under peer review):

King knew that tension fostered by nonviolent protest often provokes from oppressive systems the very reactions that protesters seek to dramatize. The predictable backlash to nonviolent direct action is a strategic advantage for protesters, drawing attention to the conditions in need of change, but only when protesters do not retaliate and return violence with violence. Quoting Gandhi, King (1958) said, "suffering is infinitely more powerful than the law of the jungle for converting the opponent and opening his ears which are otherwise shut to the voice of reason" (p. 92).

Article title: Agenda Seeding: How 1960s Black Protests Moved Elites, Public Opinion and Voting Article Abstract How do stigmatized minorities advance agendas when confronted with hostile majorities? Elite theories of influence posit marginal groups exert little power. I propose the concept of agenda seeding to describe how activists use methods like disruption to capture the attention of media and overcome political asymmetries. Further, I hypothesize protest tactics influence how news organizations frame demands. Evaluating black-led protests between 1960 and 1972, I find nonviolent activism, particularly when met with state or vigilante repression, drove media coverage, framing, congressional speech, and public opinion on civil rights. Counties proximate to nonviolent protests saw presidential Democratic vote share increase 1.6–2.5%. Protester-initiated violence, by contrast, helped move news agendas, frames, elite discourse, and public concern toward “social control.” In 1968, using rainfall as an instrument, I find violent protests likely caused a 1.5–7.9% shift among whites toward Republicans and tipped the election. Elites may dominate political communication but hold no monopoly.

It would take a two-word amendment to 42 U.S.C. § 1983 to subject ICE agents and other federal law enforcement officers to the same liability for constitutional violations that local and state officers currently face. If Congress actually cared about what it's seeing, it could pass that overnight.

Renee Good is at least the fifth death to result in an aggressive immigration crackdown by the Trump administration. Other cases include a person fatally shot by ICE outside Chicago and two people who died after being struck by vehicles while fleeing authorities.

I'm sickened and heartbroken by ICE shooting an unarmed woman in the head in Minneapolis. We can never accept this violence as normal or accept anything short of justice for these victims. We will continue to show up — together — to protect each other.
