Can the ECB stop chasing oil price spikes, please? This is the message of this important study in a nutshell. Inflation is all about fossilflation. So, we need a way to stabilize our economies that does not undermine the green transition we need, which is exactly what rate hikes end up doing.
The ECB just hiked into an oil price shock, again. In our new paper for the EP Monetary Dialogue, we argue that this needs to stop. 🧵 If inflation is a function of the energy mix (✅) and the energy mix a function of monetary policy (✅), then even a narrow reading of the ECB’s mandate ... 1/
Tightening against an energy price shock is a crude response, that only works if it chokes the economy, and green investment with it. It shouldn't be so controversial for the ECB to accept it.

Very interesting paper and thread by friends on the tensions between inflation fight and accelerating the transition (which is key to anchor long term inflation expectations).

Counterpoint: Easy to make case that the ECB should not have hiked in an undifferentiated manner. The EMPN team are making that case in our upcoming Monetary Dialogue Paper, out next week. @claraleonard.bsky.social @jvtk.bsky.social
ECB'S LANE: HARD TO MAKE CASE THAT WE SHOULDN'T HAVE HIKED
When oil prices rise, the ECB hikes rates. The show is entering its 6th season. From ongoing work of the EMPN network with @claraleonard.bsky.social, @jvtk.bsky.social & Eric Monnet.
The latest Banking on Climate Chaos report finds that financing of fossil fuels has increased. But financing varies largely by region. The US and Japan have invested the most, while Europe has declined.
Fossil fuel financing by big banks jumped 8% in 2025, analysis finds
More than a third of banks, particularly in Europe, cut fossil fuel financing due to regulation.

english isn't for cowards. if you're not saying 'torpify,' that's a skill issue. there's no Académie Française telling you what to do. if you try to type 'pallific' and freak out when you see a little red underline, maybe you're not ready to roll with the big dogs.
⏰This proposal looks really well thought-through and may also contain important insights for the EU. 💡Doing away with liability is an effective way to cut red tape and promote new private sector initiative. 😎 Expect the European People's Party to make a similar EU proposal soon.

The @pkrugman.bsky.social and @lugaricano.bsky.social debate centres on whether Europe's relative position depends on how productivity is measured. Using industry-level data, I break the gap down into its sectoral and capital components to see what is driving it. substack.com/@andreistere...
Europe's Productivity Debate Needs Better Data
Krugman is right that Europe's relative living standards have held up better than the decline narrative suggests. His critics are right that America has built a lead in intangible capital and tech.

Fully share the conclusion about the slim chances of EUR/RMB—but I recently learned from @helene-rey.bsky.social that persistent CA deficits are *not* a prerequisite for currency internationalization. The US is in fact "the banker of the world", central in gross positions www.ft.com/content/5bc0...
One of the broader implications of this piece, again, is that there is exactly zero chance of the euro or RMB replacing the dollar as the dominant global reserve currency so long as every single economic policy of both 🇪🇺 & 🇨🇳 is organized around running massive, persistent current account surpluses.

The manifestos that appear to have been written by the shooters at the Islamic Center of San Diego are a horrifying reminder that extremist ideologies are deeply interconnected. Combating Islamophobia, antisemitism and all forms of hate requires understanding this broader ecosystem of extremism. 🧵

"These subjects did not discriminate in who they hated," said Mark Remily, special agent in charge of the FBI's San Diego Field Office.
