A piece of advice for new writers: read the magazines you're submitting stories to. Not only will it help you understand their tastes, but you'll probably find some cool writers who will broaden your horizons.

ICYMI - this is my latest in BCS! It’s a story that is so dear to my heart. I hope folks enjoy it.

Live in BCS #462; podcast 363 "Dreams in Burnished Silver" @christinehanolsy.com "pressed a tiny metal disc into my hand as we passed: a minuscule mirror that captured my image in parts; a freckle here, an eyelash there. In return, I gave you my name." www.beneath-ceaseless-skies.com/stories/drea...

Now I’m comparing these to the first photos I ever took of Wilf in a yard full of flowers and feeling very emotional—back when the Summer Prince was the most terrified boy in all the world, back when I said things like “oh, we’re just fostering him.”

The same dog, fresh out of the transport van. He’s cowering in a yard, trying almost to hide behind a bowl of water. He looks much younger and much more afraid. Black and white dog hiding behind plants in the yard. He looks mournful and afraid. His cheeks haven’t yet gone white like they are now, a fact that is going to make me cry if I think about it too long.

I’ve been pretty offline this past week thanks to an excess of life events, haven’t managed to post many updates, but I guess it’s never a bad time to log on and share that the Summer Prince, Lord of All Flowers has surveyed his realm and ruled that it is good.

A black and white dog with his big tongue hanging out, eyes happy and smiley, with a blurry field of purple flowers in the background.

Still looking for my secondary world fantasy to sweep me off my feet, so if you have one, please send it to Otherside? I like stories that feel brutal and sharp, beautiful prose, and audacious worldbuilding. Above all, I'm looking for ambition rather than stories that play within an existing canon

Submission Guidelines - OTHERSIDE

It’s been a depressing week in short fiction. But… it sounds trite, but I’ve read about 250 submissions this week, and I have wept + laughed + been left dizzy and amazed too many times to count. I feel lucky to be a reader right now, even in this Age of Slop. Real art will win; real art is forever.

In this world nothing can be said to be certain, except death, taxes, and the fact that creative inspiration will only ever hit when my to-do list includes three thousand extremely urgent tasks and seven thousand medium-urgent ones for good measure.

Friendly reminder, we are open to submissions! And I am having the BEST time reading tons of incredible stories. Can’t decide what to send? With the caveat that I am only one member of a big team with varied tastes… I’d love more fantasy, more experiments with voice/form/chronology, more tragedy 👀
